Why a Young Howard Series Could Be The Big Bang Theory Franchise’s Next Step

The success of Young Sheldon proved that audiences are eager to explore the backstories of The Big Bang Theory’s beloved characters. As the franchise continues to expand, another potential origin story may already be waiting in the wings — one that was once deliberately left untold.

During the original series, Howard Wolowitz often joked about his complicated family life. He lived with his outspoken mother well into adulthood, and his father’s mysterious absence became a recurring theme. Yet despite numerous references to the character, Mr. Wolowitz never appeared on screen.

Behind the scenes, the writers actually considered introducing him. In Jessica Radloff’s book documenting the history of the show, co-producer Steve Molaro revealed that discussions about Howard’s father took place several times in the writers’ room. Ultimately, however, Chuck Lorre decided not to pursue the storyline.

While that decision kept the mystery alive during the sitcom’s run, it may now open the door to a compelling new prequel. Just as Young Sheldon reexamined the Cooper family from a new perspective, a “Young Howard” series could revisit Howard’s upbringing and explore the dynamics within the Wolowitz household.

The story could begin when Howard was still living with both parents, charting the events leading up to his father’s departure. It could also include glimpses of Howard later in life, potentially revealing what truly happened to his dad.

For a franchise built on character-driven humor and heartfelt relationships, revisiting Howard’s childhood might be the perfect way to continue the Big Bang Theory legacy.
