You better hold on tight for this one, spidermonkeys.
We may have spent our teenage years fawning over the fictional heartthrob of the 2010s, Edward Cullen, but it turns out Twilight’s leading lady wasn’t as unconditionally and irrevocably in love with the vegetarian vampire as the rest of us were. During a recent episode of Amanda Hirsch’s Not Skinny But Not Fat podcast, Kristen Stewart pointed out some major red flags on Edward’s part that have previously been overlooked.
Hirsch calls Bella a “little desperate” since she was so “willing to change her life” for Edward. However, Stewart was quick to jump to her character’s defense, saying she was only trying to gain back some control in her relationship.
“Yeah, but he was trying to sort of control whether or not she made choices for herself,” she said before adding what she would have done were she in her character Bella’s position. “I would’ve broken up with him immediately.”
Twilight fans know Edward for being overbearing and overprotective of Bella’s safety, but between telling her who she can or can’t hang out with (ahem, Jacob Black) and reluctant her to turn her into a vampire, despite her incessant pleas, the brooding vamp sometimes took it a little too far. Which Stewart admitted would be a dealbreaker for her IRL.
“I mean, if I was like, ‘Hey, I want to try that,’ and he was like, ‘No, this is just for me,’ I would be like, ‘Well, this is also just for me: My whole life, without you,'” she said.
“So you’re saying Edward is fucked up?” Hirsch added, to which Stewart replied, “Yeah. I get the sort of protection thing, but you got to let a girl make her own choices.”
The actress starred in the cult-favorite series alongside her ex-boyfriend Robert Pattinson, who played Edward and has recently taken a trip down memory lane while promoting her new project, Love Lies Bleeding. When speaking with WhoWhatWear about her own wedding to fiancée Dylan Meyer, Stewart gushed about Bella’s now-famous Carolina Herrera wedding dress from The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn—Part 1, saying she would even wear it IRL. “I love that dress so much,” she said. “Yeah, I think if I were to ever do like a classic wedding dress, this is kind of the one.”
