“The peak of my darkness”: Simon Helberg Suffered Through a Horrible Condition During The Big Bang Theory, Even His Wife Decided He isn’t Ready to Start a Family
Simon Helberg’s mental health issues took a toll on his personal life.
SUMMARY
– 2007 saw Simon Helberg marking his TBBT debut and later tying the knot with Jocelyn Towne.
– But despite being one of his top moments in life, he also deemed this period the peak of his life’s darkness.
– This was a result of Helberg’s mental health struggles, which pushed his wife to postpone their plans for a family.
Opposed to his overly confident persona in the early seasons of The Big Bang Theory, in real life, Simon Helberg is a lot more reserved and has struggled with self-esteem issues. While his tenure as Howard Wolowitz garnered him immense success and shot him to stardom, the fame came with its own set of consequences for the actor.
Back in 2022, the actor opened up about his OCD, and while he still deals with it to this day, things were a lot more dire during the early seasons of the acclaimed sitcom.
Simon Helberg’s Mental Health Struggles Postponed His Plans To Start a Family
While on paper, things were going great for Simon Helberg back in 2007, as after the pilot for the sitcom, he tied the knot with Jocelyn Towne, he deemed this period of his life, “The peak of my darkness”. Despite being the best moment of his life prior to welcoming his kids years later, things went downhill for the actor, as with the success came the fear of losing.
The actor recalled speaking to various therapists, revealing that he was given different medications. Further detailing his struggle, he said:
I remember being curled up in a fetal position in my dressing room multiple times. Um, hysterical, you know… but really like for a long time… and then there’s that awful ugly part of it… Why am I not enjoying this? I’m so ungrateful, I’m so awful, I’m so superficial, what’s wrong with me?
Look at all the other hardships in the world… And here I am at the highest point in my career, and this great moment in my personal life, and I can’t get out the door. I can’t get off the floor.
His battle with mental health convinced Towne at the time that it wasn’t the right moment to start a family, but fortunately, Helberg eventually got the help he needed after finding a great therapist.
Simon Helberg Is Nothing Like His TBBT Counterpart
Although things ameliorated for the actor, as he and his spouse welcomed their daughter in 2012 and son in 2014, the actor continued to struggle with self-esteem issues. The Young Sheldon star revealed that he is deeply insecure, stating that he is nothing like Howard Wolowitz in real life. He further joked that his wife finds the character hilarious following its contrast from the actor.
He told Under the Radar:
I think [my wife] finds it hilarious that I could be that confident with the ladies because she sees my neurotic, insecure side.
But despite suffering from severe mental health issues, the actor didn’t let it hinder his performance in TBBT and is often seen as one of the most talented of The Big Bang Theory cast.
