The Big Bang Theory Showrunner Unraveled Mystery Around Penny’s Surname
Throughout its run, The Big Bang Theory continued to develop its characters, covering their arc to keep audiences hooked, adding charm to the show. Given the extensive exploration of its characters, it was always a mystery as to why Kaley Cuoco’s Penny never had her surname revealed.
She was introduced as an aspiring actress who lived across from Sheldon Cooper (Jim Parsons) and his roommate, Leonard Hofstadter (Johnny Galecki).
Although she eventually received a happy ending with Leonard, taking on his surname, showrunners remained tight-lipped about her own surname.
In a 2019 Comic-con International panel with the writers, co-showrunner, Steven Molaro reflected on why they kept Penny’s surname a mystery from audiences. He took over the showrunner duties in the later TBBT seasons. He shared,
She didn’t have one for the longest time, and then we just got superstitious about it. We were nervous to really give her one, so it will, and always will, only be Hofstadter, right?
He explained their decision regarding Penny’s last name stemmed from a blend of superstition and creative choice. Given that the character has remarkably captivated audiences’ attention with its intriguing backstory, it would have been distracting had they provided Penny with a proper surname.

Kaley Cuoco Almost Lost The Big Bang Theory Role When She First Auditioned
Portraying the small-town girl role reaped major benefits in Kaley Cuoco’s acting journey but that opportunity was almost gone during the initial casting phases of the sitcom. Prior to The Big Bang Theory‘s official premiere, its unaired pilot had a different character, whose name wasn’t even Penny.
In 2022, a book titled, The Big Bang Theory: The Definitive, Inside Story of the Epic Hit Series written by Jessica Radloff, delved into its history.
At the same, the author had a conversation with the show’s casting director Ken Miller via PEOPLE who revealed that Cuoco was a bad fit for the character, Katie, who arguably was an alternate incarnation of Penny.
While she left a positive impression on the casting directors with her comedic timing and charisma, she “just didn’t bring the dark qualities.”
Initial decisions seemed to favor another actress, before Jodi Lyn O’Keefe, was ultimately cast for the Katie role. With Amanda Walsh eventually ended up stepping into her shoes, it was Cuoco who went on to receive the female protagonist’s role, and became Penny for TBBT fans.
