Kevin Costner’s recent comments about who he believes his target audience is has some of his fans riled up. The actor recently got candid about the audience he has in mind when creating his films, saying he “makes movies for men,” ostracizing half of the population.
The Oscar winner, who has become a staple in the Western genre, said he is aware his directorial efforts tend to appeal more to men, but he emphasized that strong women are his primary interest. “I make movies for men. That’s what I do,” Kevin said on the latest Happy Sad Confused podcast, per Variety. “But I won’t make a movie unless I have strong women characters.”
He added: “That’s how I’ve conducted my career and I think that’s why I have a good following.”
He also said he “couldn’t conceive of a scene that didn’t involve a woman” while creating the story. In spite of the second half of the quote, fans are not happy with the actor’s remarks. “No longer a fan,” one fan tweeted. “I’m just happy that Kevin Costner is making movies for men, at a time when they need it most,” one fan said sarcastically.
Another added: “I’m about to watch white men well past their prime make their case as to why we should believe in America. That’s right, I’m seated for Kevin Costner’s HORIZON: AN AMERICAN SAGA: PART ONE.”
“I mean okay fine whatever the Men can have all the Kevin Costner movies EXCEPT for this one. This one is for me and the girls,” one woman shared along with a poster of Dancing With Wolves.
The podcast appearance comes after Kevin sat down with Gayle King, and they talked about him quitting Yellowstone. The actor was vague when he announced the end of the beloved Paramount series, while rumors circulated that the cancelations came amid issues regarding pay, scheduling, and claims he had clashed with creator Taylor Sheridan.
While on CBS Mornings, Kevin said that he “loved” the show and would be willing to go back “in a second,” but didn’t share more details. “I loved the show before anybody,” he told Gayle. “It was Taylor and myself. The truth never changes. That love was really strong.”
The actor is promoting his recent film Horizon, which is also a Western. Besides Horizon, his directorial projects also include Dances With Wolves, The Postman, and Open Range.
