“A movie star… very difficult to get”: One Young Sheldon Star Whose Breakout Role Was in a $43M Chris Evans Movie Was a No-Show in Final Season as She’s Too Famous

McKenna Grace’s new found fame in Hollywood ended up being the reason for her not featuring in the finale of Young Sheldon.

The stupendous success of The Big Bang Theory gave rise to a spin-off series titled Young Sheldon which put the spotlight on Jim Parsons’ iconic character and his journey to becoming the eccentric genius he was. Apart from the impressive Iain Armitage as the lead actor, the show benefited from many interesting characters including Paige Swanson played by McKenna Grace.

Paige like Sheldon, is a child prodigy as well, and plays a relatively small but significant part through the seasons in how the central protagonist tackles many issues in his life. Surprisingly though, the character was not given a prominent culmination arc in the series finale owing to the massive stardom she had achieved parallelly in the industry.

This Young Sheldon Character Did Not Get Screen Time In the Final Season For An Ironic Reason

Young Sheldon gave audiences a glimpse into the genius mind and personality of a young Sheldon Cooper, played brilliantly by Jim Parsons as the older version in The Big Bang Theory. With Iain Armitage headlining this spin-off series, the show also featured many interesting characters in Sheldon’s life over the years.

One of them who appeared only for 9 episodes but made a huge impact, was Paige Swanson played by McKenna Grace. The character who is also a prodigious young talent, played a key role especially when the protagonist had to deal with feeling of jealousy when confronted with competition.

Grace has been a recognizable figure with her presence in films like Gifted in which she shared screen space with Chris Evans. Annabelle Comes Home and The Bad Seed are other credits to her name. Her big commercial break saw her working with Bill Murray in his reprisal of his famous role in Ghostbusters: Afterlife. The star regaled audiences once more in 2024’s Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire.

This meteoric rise in her fame meant that the actor was in high demand. This ironically turned out to be the reason for the young star not featuring in the final season of the show. While many fans were wondering why the series reached its culmination without given Paige Swanson a final farewell, executive producer Steve Holland addressed this in a chat with TV Line.

People online respond to Paige and I think that’s because Mckenna is incredible. The downside of Mckenna being incredible is that Mckenna is a movie star and that makes Mckenna very difficult to get.

Fans of Grace and the show though, would have hoped to see the character’s narrative come a full circle, especially since she was significant to Sheldon’s development and decision-making in a big way.

This Sitcom Producer Believed that McKenna Grace’s Character Had Done Her Bit

McKenna Grace’s portrayal of the child prodigy Paige Swanson in Young Sheldon became a fan-favorite with audiences despite the star appearing in only a handful of episodes. Having a similar functioning brain like the protagonist, she is the only one to ever pose any sort of challenge to Sheldon, who has to navigate feeling of jealousy among other emotions.

In addition, she is sociable unlike Sheldon, but goes through a rough time after her parents’ divorce, which then takes her down a darker path to making some tough decisions. While producer Steve Holland addressed Grace’s conspicuous absence in the series finale, which he revealed was due to her extremely tight filming schedule, he also believed that the character’s arc didn’t necessarily warrant a culmination.

Speaking to TV Line, Holland stated that Paige had served her purpose in how she played a significant part in Sheldon’s evolution, which he felt was clearly explained to audiences through her appearances in the show.

When we got into this season, especially with it being a shortened season, we never thought that [Paige’s storyline] was an arc that needed more closing than it got. There was a parallel; she was a bit of a mirror image of Sheldon — a different way that Sheldon could have turned out — and I think we saw that play out.

Having said that, the producer also lauded Grace as an actor and her contribution towards making Young Sheldon a success. He stated that he would have loved to have her back on the show if there had been a genuine need for her character to be there.
