With fans still reeling from the explosive events of late 2025, Newman’s comments provide a much-needed roadmap for the “Stellaride” future and the firehouse hierarchy.

When the show returns on Wednesday, January 7, 2026, fans will immediately find themselves back in that smoke-filled apartment. The fall finale, titled “Pierce the Vein,” left Severide (Taylor Kinney), Captain Van Meter, and a school principal trapped by a deliberate arson attack with no exit.
Newman and executive producer Reza Tabrizi have hinted that while the situation is “as dire as it gets,” the primary focus isn’t just survival—it’s the fallout. Tabrizi recently noted that while the “Stellaride” relationship will endure, it will be faced with “new dynamics and challenges.” This has led many to believe that while Severide survives the leap from the window, his mentor Van Meter may be the one to make the ultimate sacrifice to ensure Kelly’s safety.
A New Paradigm of Family
Perhaps the most significant “silence” broken was regarding the tragic pregnancy loss revealed earlier in Season 14. Newman explained the creative choice to have Stella and Kelly lose the baby so soon after a failed adoption, stating it was vital to “keep it real” and reflect the unpredictable nature of a first responder’s life.
However, the “fate” of the Severide family isn’t a dead end. Newman teased a “different paradigm of family,” confirming that the show is shifting toward an adoption storyline involving a teenager. This new direction is designed to challenge Severide in ways a newborn wouldn’t, forcing him to navigate the complexities of being a father figure to someone who already has a past.
The Path to “Chief Severide”?
Looking further into 2026, the “boss” has also hinted at a major professional shift. With Chief Dom Pascal (Dermot Mulroney) dealing with personal grief and a “noticeable step back” from leadership, the show has been quietly setting the trajectory for Severide to rise.
“Severide has grown into the level-headed leader we know and love today,” insiders noted. The back half of Season 14 will reportedly see Pascal increasingly rely on Kelly to shadow him and take over at the station, fueling rumors that the season could end with Severide finally trading his lieutenant’s bugles for a chief’s white helmet.
