NCIS closed its December 9 episode with a touching dedication to Thomas Buckley, a beloved assistant director who passed away earlier this year at age 55. The episode ended with a tribute card reading, “In memoriam to our friend and colleague Thomas Buckley. We will miss you,” alongside a smiling photo of Buckley at a sports event — a perfect nod to one of his greatest passions.
Buckley, who lived in Burbank, California, passed away on April 28, 2025, in Leavenworth, Kansas. His path into entertainment was uniquely colorful: he launched a DJ business, suited up as the Austin Ice Bats’ hockey mascot, and worked on the 1996 film Waiting for Guffman, kickstarting a career he continued until his final days.
Away from set life, Buckley was known for his deep love of sports — especially the Houston Astros, Notre Dame Fighting Irish, and Texas Longhorns. He had a personal mission to see the Astros play in every MLB stadium and attended a game in Kansas City the night before his passing.
A talented home chef and creator of infused vodkas, Buckley also poured his heart into a nonprofit project aimed at helping wounded and disabled veterans attend sporting events across the country.
Friends, family, and NCIS colleagues continue celebrating his life through a Facebook group called “Memories of Thom Buckley,” where loved ones share stories and photos. One tribute from Joan Ivette, posted shortly after his passing, summed up his connection to the NCIS set: “He loved working at NCIS… they made his day doing what he loved the most.”
The tribute arrives just weeks before NCIS’ landmark 500th episode, set to air March 17, 2026 — a milestone Buckley would no doubt have celebrated with the crew he cherished.
