New ‘Big Bang Theory’ spinoff confirmed with multiverse plot featuring Stuart Bloom and returning cast

A brand-new spinoff of The Big Bang Theory has officially been confirmed, with the upcoming series centered on fan-favorite character Stuart Bloom and built around a multiverse storyline.

The Big Bang Theory originally premiered in 2007 and ran for 12 seasons before concluding. Its universe has continued to expand through spinoffs such as Young Sheldon, which aired for seven seasons, and Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage, which debuted in 2024 and has already been renewed for a second season.

Rumors of a Stuart-focused series first surfaced in 2023. Now, two years later, HBO Max has officially greenlit the project, as reported by Variety.

The new series, titled Stuart Fails to Save the Universe, will see Kevin Sussman reprise his role as Stuart. Returning with him are Lauren Lapkus as Denise, Brian Posehn as Bert, and John Ross Bowie as Barry Kripke.

According to the official synopsis, the story follows comic book shop owner Stuart Bloom after he accidentally destroys a device built by Sheldon and Leonard, triggering a multiverse catastrophe. To fix reality, Stuart teams up with his girlfriend Denise, his geologist friend Bert, and quantum physicist—and perpetual nuisance—Barry Kripke. Their journey takes them across alternate universes populated with new versions of beloved Big Bang Theory characters. As the title hints, things quickly spiral out of control.

Screenwriter Zak Penn describes the show as something “the characters from The Big Bang Theory would watch,” while co-creator Chuck Lorre promises, “There’s a lot of CGI.”

Although no premiere date has been announced, the spinoff is expected to arrive on HBO Max sometime in 2026.
