Netflix is officially ending its Netflix Stories game franchise — the streamer’s interactive mobile collection inspired by hit series like Love Is Blind, Virgin River, Emily in Paris, Outer Banks, and Perfect Match.
The move comes as part of a broader overhaul of Netflix’s gaming division, which will now focus on developing party games, narrative-driven titles, kids’ games, and mainstream mobile releases — along with a new slate of games playable directly on TV. As part of the transition, sources confirm that an unspecified number of employees have been laid off.
Netflix had invested heavily in the Stories franchise, which offered choose-your-own-adventure–style experiences set in the worlds of its most popular shows. The most recent title, Sweet Magnolias: Stories, debuted in February. However, a planned Ginny & Georgia game has now been canceled.
Despite the shutdown, previously released Netflix Stories titles will remain available for play within the Netflix app.
The strategic shift follows the arrival of Alain Tascan, who became Netflix’s president of games last summer. Tascan has been leading a reorientation of the streamer’s gaming efforts, aligning them more closely with Netflix’s overall entertainment goals.
At the Game Developers Conference earlier this month, Tascan discussed Netflix’s broader gaming ambitions, without directly addressing the Stories closure. “We have to match the overall mission of Netflix — otherwise we’re just a distraction,” he said.
Netflix’s reorganization comes after several major moves in recent months. In October, the streamer closed its Team Blue studio, which had been developing a big-budget shooter. Tascan emphasized that this does not signal reduced ambitions: “We’re not scaling back at all,” he told Variety.
During GDC, Tascan also unveiled Spirit Crossing — a visually stunning, Studio Ghibli-inspired life simulation game from Netflix’s Spry Fox studio, described as a “massive multiplayer online world.” He hinted at plans to further integrate Netflix franchises into gaming, including new incentives for players of its Squid Game mobile title and more crossovers blending storytelling and interactivity in universes like Bridgerton.
Launched in 2021, Netflix Stories quickly became a fan favorite among romance and drama enthusiasts. In 2024, Netflix even promised to release one new Stories game each month. Recent titles included Netflix Stories: A Perfect Couple, a nine-chapter mystery romance with multiple endings, and Netflix Stories: A Virgin River Christmas, which let players visit the beloved small town for festive adventures alongside Mel, Jack, Hope, and Doc.
While Netflix Stories has reached its end, the streamer’s evolving gaming division shows no signs of slowing down — just shifting gears toward experiences that better fit its long-term vision.
