Things are about to get personal for Simone in Grey’s Anatomy, but it has nothing to do with her love life.
Meanwhile, Blue and Jules will take action that they may end up regretting, but it could also be just what is necessary to continue seeing how broken the system is.
Grey’s Anatomy Season 22 Episode 5 continues to do what the series has always done best: highlight the problems real Americans face in healthcare.

There is also going to be a Jo and Link storyline, which will hopefully give the two time to open up about their feelings, as I do feel a few things have been glossed over since Link’s outburst.
Simone’s Patient Makes It Personal
The synopsis for Grey’s Anatomy Season 22, Episode 5 reveals that Simone will treat a patient with a “surprising revelation.”
Jo navigates a challenging case with a pregnant mother, while Blue and Jules care for a diabetic patient. Meanwhile, Simone treats a patient with a surprising revelation.
We get to know a little more about what that is in the promo, as Simone sees that the patient has photos with Simone’s mom.
Of course, Simone has questions, as she never did know her mom, who died in childbirth at Grey Sloan Memorial.
This is a storyline that Grey’s Anatomy teased early on in Simone’s introduction, then seemed to be forgotten.

I did wonder if we would find out that Bailey or Webber had treated Simone’s mom or knew of her as a patient in the hospital, but then nothing came of the arc.
The focus then moved onto her relationship with Lucas, and now it’s on to the (not-quite) relationship with Bryant — so color me surprised when I learn that we’ll get something to do with her mom in the new episode.
It’s not all that crazy to find out a patient had a connection to Simone’s mom, and this could be a great chance for Simone to learn a little more about the woman she never met.
By focusing on Simone’s personal arc, it offers some hope that Grey’s Anatomy will remember Lucas’s ADHD storyline.
Blue Makes a House Call
Meanwhile, Blue and Jules deal with a diabetic patient, but it’s not in the traditional sense of the phrase.
Rather than the patient coming into the hospital, the promo for Grey’s Anatomy Season 22 Episode 5 tells us that a patient has let her prescription lapse.
While the promo and synopsis don’t make it clear, I’d hazard a guess that this is a Type 1 diabetic patient, which means that she needs insulin on a regular basis.
This links to a very real problem happening in America right now.
Due to the cost of insulin, patients are having to make a choice between their life-saving medication and a roof over their heads, and they will often try to space out the need for medication to ensure they can eat and sleep somewhere.

Blue doesn’t want to see someone go untreated for a life-threatening illness, and so, he and Jules make a house call, despite it potentially getting them fired.
This is sure to be when Blue realizes just how broken the medical system is, as every doctor needs to learn.
From there, he’ll have to make a choice — a choice that many others, including Bailey and Meredith, have had to make in the past.
Will he find a way to commit insurance fraud, or will he make a personal sacrifice to help a patient?

Jo Has a Challenging Case
Finally, the synopsis tells us about Jo’s part of the episode, which involves a challenging case of a pregnant mother.
However, I’m more intrigued by the personal storyline between Jo and Link.
It was just three episodes ago when Link lashed out at her, and while his feelings at the time were understandable, he has not exactly apologized for his actions.
The two haven’t had a chance to speak on-screen, and it feels like this is a conversation we have to believe happened at home.

I always get annoyed when something like that happens in a TV series.
We need to see the two have an honest conversation, as that’s the only way their relationship can work.
Ben and Bailey have proven time and time again that open communication about feelings and fears is the key to success, and it would be great for Grey’s Anatomy to show it with another couple instead of risking breaking yet another one up.
Grey’s Anatomy airs on Thursdays at 10/9c on ABC.
