Yellowstone Universe Future in Limbo as Taylor Sheridan Reportedly Plans Major Studio Exit md06

The Yellowstone universe’s future is now undecided as series creator Taylor Sheridan eyes a major studio exit after closing a new TV deal. Sheridan signed a deal with NBCUniversal for an eight-year movie deal beginning in March 2026 and a five-year TV deal that begins in January 2029. His movie and TV deals with Paramount expire at the end of 2028.

If he does exit the company, it would mean detaching himself from the many successful TV shows he’s made since launching Yellowstone in 2018. Some of these are upcoming spinoffs of the Western drama. New installments include the upcoming The Dutton Ranch, centered around Beth Dutton and Rip Wheeler, Y: Marshals, focused on Kayce Dutton, and The Madison, starring Michelle Pfeiffer.

According to a report from Puck, it’s unclear what will happen to existing Sheridan TV shows like Yellowstone once his deal with NBCUniverse goes through. Paramount Skydance CEO David Ellison has reportedly not attempted to extend Sheridan’s movie or TV deal with Paramount, making it likely he won’t be working with them beyond his existing 2028 contract.

However, this doesn’t mean the shows under their umbrella are over. With Yellowstone‘s spinoffs expanding, the franchise, along with other existing Sheridan TV shows, could continue beyond his time with Paramount. This means the studio could greenlight new seasons and new spinoffs of the franchise long after Sheridan departs. The same goes for his other TV series too.

As of writing, there are five upcoming Yellowstone spinoffs in development. Y: Marshals will air on CBS in Spring 2026, while The Dutton Ranch, The Madison, and prequel series 1944 will be released on Paramount+. There’s also 6666, a spinoff about the Four Sixes Ranch, whose production is currently on hold, but is expected to air on Paramount Network.

For now, Sheridan is attached to all of these projects, but it seems like he won’t be involved once his deal with NBCUniversal begins in 2029. However, the rights to all his shows, including Yellowstone, still belong to Paramount. This means the Western franchise can continue without him, different creative teams being involved in their development once the creator departs.

While this means the Yellowstone franchise may not end once Sheridan’s contract with Paramount is up, it’ll feel quite different without his involvement. Since his TV deal with NBCUniversal is still three years away, there could still be some shake-ups. Either way, it seems likely that, as long as the franchise is successful, it will continue, with or without Sheridan.
