Speaking with Us Weekly, de Pablo broke down what the couple’s return to form means for a potential NCIS: Tony & Ziva season 2. The actor, who portrays Ziva, explained how past events are always working their way into the couple’s present lives. However, by standing with one another, they can overcome any obstacle the world throws at them:
The past is always coming back and haunting them. And somehow that past is always bringing them back into something that they have to overcome. They’re always constantly being tested, and they have to rise [and] rely on each other. Trust in each other.
De Pablo’s explanation speaks to the strength of the romance between Tony and Ziva. While they’ve had bumps in the road, the pair would still be rekindling their love should NCIS: Tony & Ziva season 2 happen. But that doesn’t mean it’s going to be easy, especially since the pair drifted apart so much prior to the show’s events.
When the series first began, it offered viewers a glimpse into how Tony and Ziva’s relationship had a multitude of bumps in the road from 2020 onward. However, by the end of the spinoff, the core duo found themselves drawn closer than ever before. This was no doubt aided by Jonah targeting their daughter, Tali, forcing them to work together.
The core characters in NCIS: Tony & Ziva are now back to their status quo. With the couple now relying on one another more, it seems they’re ready to settle down after all they’ve been through. This applies to the franchise overall, which has seen everything from Ziva’s fakeout death to Tony being a single father for some time.
While it’s unclear where a potential NCIS: Tony & Ziva season 2 could go, de Pablo’s statement signals there are still plenty of stories that could be told about the couple. Now that their relationship has entered a new chapter and Tony’s name has been cleared, any threats the pair face next they can face by one another’s side.
Since their past is full of potential for how NCIS: Tony & Ziva can continue its story, the show appears poised to keep up the momentum with more familiar ideas.
