Amelia takes losses hard, so it’s not surprising that she’s closing herself off with the loss of Beltran. Maggie returns to support her in Grey’s Anatomy season 22, episode 2.
Caution: This post contains SPOILERS from Grey’s Anatomy season 22, episode 2.
We start with Meredith doing a surgery, and there’s a surprise cameo from Ellis Grey. It’s clearly a nightmare, especially when her children also turn up. Knocking wakes her up, and it’s Maggie at the door. The two of them are now there to help Amelia get through this stage of grief.
Meanwhile, we get the traditional speech from Webber to the new interns. This time, it’s in an OR that is being rebuilt. While Webber gives the speech, Bailey is trying to find the best second year residents to teach them, knowing that they’re all currently grieving the loss of Beltran.
Elsewhere in the hospital, tensions continue to rise between Teddy and Owen, while Jules struggles with the locker in the new locker room. Yes, she was trying to open the wrong door, and Blue helps her with that one. I do hope to see a friendship continue to build between the two of them, because Jules will need that support considering she was there at the time of Beltran’s death.
Link focuses on recovery in Grey’s Anatomy season 22, episode 2
Owen walks into Link’s room to find out how he’s doing. Jo is worried that he’s pushing himself too much, and it’s clear that he’s not fully telling the truth about his pain levels. Why can’t any of the doctors see that?
As for Jules, she finds herself on Winston’s service with her new interns, and she clearly doesn’t have the patience for any of them. This does give her a chance to ask Winston to forget about what almost happened in the closet.
In the ER, Ben is giving a speech and handing out assignments when a construction worker comes rushing in. Something went rolling. That something? Only the forklift truck, and yes, a guy is impaled by it!

Jules is not doing okay
Back with Amelia, Meredith and Maggie realize how bad things are for Amelia, and not just with the grief. She’s not done laundry for weeks properly because her washing machine is broken, and there’s only so many times she can sneak over to Meredith’s old piece. Realizing that things need cleaning up for Scout to come back, Maggie and Meredith push for Amelia to get up and get back to life.
At the hospital, it’s all hands on deck to help the injured construction worker. Teddy isn’t happy about the entire situation, but she’s actually stressed because of the situation on her desk. There are way too many files all over the place. As Webber kicks her out of the office to check on the injured construction worker, you just know that he’s going to help fix the office situation.
Blue wants in on the surgery on the construction worker so much that he takes over his interns’ work to get it done, sending them to the skills lab. Well, that was a bad idea, because Bryant decides that he wants to go see patients by himself.
Jules continues to struggle with grief (and potentially guilt) as Winston starts talking about Beltran’s memorial service, which was live streamed for everyone. As Jules tries to convince Winston she’s fine, the scans for their patients comes up, showing a mass.

Maggie is full of surprises
Things continue to be tense between Simone and Lucas, which isn’t that surprising considering she told him that she slept with someone while they’d been on a short break. I get being on a break, but Simone gave them no time at all. The problem is that the patient needs to be the main focus, and everyone is arguing about what to do. At least Teddy and Ben are on the same page, though, even if it is to intubate a patient while he’s awake!
Winston and Jules need to get to the bottom of the mass that they’ve found on their patient. Their patient is secretive of having emigrated from Cambodia during the genocide. Is it possible that he was affected by mustard gas?
Over at Meredith’s old house, Meredith and Maggie are trying to help Amelia. When Amelia wants to be left alone, Meredith and Maggie make it clear that won’t happen. However, it starts Maggie crying, and she reveals that she’s pregnant. Say what?
While it’s all hands on deck for the construction worker, Bryant is called in by a nurse to check on a patient. He doesn’t correct the nurse that he’s just a first-day intern, but it’s soon clear that he doesn’t know anything. As the patient’s boil on his arm starts spraying blood, all Bryant can ask is for everyone to page Dr. Kwan.
Who’s the father of Maggie’s baby? It’s a donor. She’s decided to go through IVF, and she didn’t tell either of her sisters because she thought they would talk her out of it. However, they are supportive, and this could be the break Amelia needs to get through her grief.
Meanwhile, Blue gets to the patient’s room, where it turns out that Bryant has got it all under control. Bailey is also impressed with the work that he’s been able to do, so she switches Bryant to her service. That’s sure to cause more problems for Simone and Lucas.
They’re not the only ones about to have problems, either. Jo walks into Link’s room to find him moving around, but it looks like his catheter is still in place. Of course, he falls over, and rather than lean on his wife for support, it’s clear that he’s embarrassed by everything. He doesn’t want her there.
Can I just say that I’m so glad to see Bohkee in the OR? She wasn’t mentioned in the Grey’s Anatomy season 22 premiere, but we see her in the OR with the construction worker. It’s an OR that Bailey encourages Teddy to get out of.
In another OR, Jules has a flashback of the week before. As machines sound, she goes back to the room where Beltran died, and it’s clear that she’s going to suffer from the trauma that she experienced. I’m surprised nobody even considered that she might have trauma from her experience.

Link gets raw and honest
There’s a great thing for the construction worker. A lot of his major organs have been missed by the forklift, but there is some damage to some parts of his body. Once again, though, Simone and Lucas continue to cause issues, and it’s time for Ben to step in, making it clear that Lucas is the one causing the most issues and tells him to step back. I don’t blame him, and I’m happy to see Bailey stand up for him.
In Winston’s OR, he forces her to step back from the patient. She is to sit down until she gets her mind back under control, where she starts naming things to ground him. That gives Winston time to find out what the mass is. Well, it’s nothing dangerous! It’s an extra spleen of all things! Now that is one for the history books.
We finally learn why Amelia is struggling so much with Beltran’s loss. She blames herself for the explosion in the first place, because she shouldn’t have agreed to do the first surgery. Now she’s living with the guilt of not just her friend dying, but also a little girl suffering from locked-in syndrome. While Amelia is busy blaming herself, Maggie shares that she wouldn’t blame her if it was her baby.
There’s a beautiful bonding moment between the three of these women, and I’ve completely not realized I’ve missed it until I’ve got it back. Maybe they should open a wine bar. Amelia only needs to sell it! Oh, Meredith!
Back with Link, he feels bad for snapping at Jo, but Owen realizes that Link needs to get the anger out. So, he listens, and it’s not surprising that he’s mad Jo looks at him as a patient, that so many people died or were hurt, and that he’s supposed to be happy that he’s alive. There’s also the thought that he was so close to never meeting his daughters, and while he can heal from the physical damage, he doesn’t know how to heal from the mental parts. And that’s so raw and honest. I don’t remember Grey’s Anatomy being this emotional in so long!

Webber gets his office back
One thing Bailey has been able to do time and time again is admit when she’s wrong, especially with Ben. This is one of those times, as she realizes that Ben’s suggestion of awake intubation was likely the right decision. Now she needs him to become her Chief Resident, because he has all the skills that are needed of that. Hopefully, everyone just sees that she is right in offering this position and doesn’t claim favorites, because he is the right one for the job.
As Winston and Jules share with their patient’s daughter about the situation, the daughter shares that she would love to know her dad’s history. It’s clear that he is struggling with the grief and trauma of everything from Cambodia. She was taking him to a retreat to help him with that, and it’s clear that Jules is understanding that she needs to do something similar.
Jules decides to turn to her friends for this, paging them 911 for it. At first, Lucas is angry, but Simone gets it. They all understand that she needs this, and we get to see just how far these four interns have come. As much as I don’t always like Simone, I’m glad she is the one who starts it and just runs with what her friends need, and I’m also glad to see that Lucas can put his anger to one side for this.
And just as I expected, Teddy walks into her office to find out that Webber filed a worker’s comp report with Catherine. Her desk is also cleared, although nothing is mentioned about that. Instead, Teddy points out that she struggles to deal with everything as well as being Chief, and while she loves her job, she’s underwater. Well, Webber is more than happy to step up and help out, and Teddy is happy to accept his help. It didn’t take long for Webber to step back into that.
With that, Webber does his first action as Chief. Amelia comes to ask for a sabbatical, and Webber is more than happy to accept that. While she takes time from the hospital, Owen heads out to the trailer that he once lived in since he can’t go home and he hates the hotel. It all ends with Meredith and Maggie connecting at the carousel that never stops turning. Again, I just miss these moments in Grey’s Anatomy. I’m glad we got them in this episode.
Grey’s Anatomy airs on Thursdays at 10/9c on ABC.
