If you’re a fan of Yellowstone and its various spin-offs, you likely have lots of questions, one of which is: Will there be a Season 6?
What started as a simple Western drama became one of the strongest franchises on television. With five seasons and plenty of spin-offs still going strong, it’s clear: fans love being immersed in the sprawling Yellowstone timeline.
But with news of Yellowstone being canceled, plus confusion over the arrival of Yellowstone Season 5 Part 2, the Dutton community has been hit hard.
As the wait continues for new episodes, rumors and speculation surrounding a possible Season 6 have grown in intensity. We’ve broken down what you need to know about the potential for another season of Yellowstone.
Yellowstone Season 6: Is it happening?
There won’t be a Season 6 of Yellowstone, as it was announced in 2023 that the show would end with Yellowstone Season 5 Part 2, due to be released in November 2024.
The Season 5 Part 1 finale was meant to serve as a season break. However, the show is now set to end with the remaining six episodes in Part 2. With that, the flagship Yellowstone series will end once and for all.
Why is there no Yellowstone Season 6?
Kevin Costner’s departure as John Dutton was a key contribution to the show’s cancellation, which happened because of scheduling, creative, and pay disputes.
Things got rocky because of an alleged behind-the-scenes feud between Kevin Costner and Taylor Sheridan. Costner’s been working on his four-part Western epic Horizon, which reportedly caused issues with Sheridan.
According to Costner, pay disputes and creative disagreements also contributed to his wanting to leave. As such, he exited the series officially after Season 5 Part 1 aired, and Yellowstone will close out its final episodes (most likely without him) in Part 2.
While Costner’s lawyer denied the allegations, Paramount confirmed Season 5 would be the end of the Yellowstone flagship series, and also announced two new TV shows.
What’s next for Yellowstone?
There are multiple Yellowstone spin-offs in development, including a prequel show, Yellowstone 1944, and two sequels, Yellowstone 2024 and Yellowstone 6666.
The Dutton family tree keeps growing. The new spin-offs — 1944 and 2024 — were announced in May 2023. While not much information has been given about the plot or cast of these shows, we can take a few educated guesses.
1944 will likely be a sequel to 1923 Season 2, while Yellowstone 2024 could be a direct follow-up to the main Yellowstone series.
6666 will step away from the Duttons and be set on the famous Texas ranch with new characters.
Matthew McConaughey was announced to be joining the franchise in some capacity, and many believe he’ll be the lead of Yellowstone 2024. Although this hasn’t been officially confirmed, that would make the most sense for the next step in the game plan.
In a statement, Chris McCarthy, president & CEO of Showtime and MTV Entertainment Studios, said, “Yellowstone has been the cornerstone on which we have launched an entire universe of global hits – from 1883 to Tulsa King, and I am confident our sequel will be another big hit, thanks to the brilliant creative mind of Taylor Sheridan and our incredible casts who bring these shows to life.”
