She had style, she had flair, she was… Cardi B?! The internet is a-flutter with the news that Fran Drescher would like to make a reboot of her iconic ’90s show The Nanny, this time co-starring with none other than Cardi B.
Why Cardi? It all started in September during Milan Fashion Week, when the rapper channeled Nanny Fine’s classic leopard print look, even giving Drescher a shout-out on her Instagram:
“I was so flattered,” Drescher told PeopleTV’s Chatter on Wednesday. “And then I got my juices flowing and thought, ‘Wait a minute, she’s from New York, we both have funny voices, she could be my daughter!’”
This is actually something fans have been talking about for months, especially after Cardi B made an appearance on The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon wearing a particularly Fran-esque outfit and hairdo:
Watched the clip of @iamcardib on Jimmy Fallon and this lewk, that personality and accent made me think she’d be perfect for a reboot of “The Nanny.”
Drescher’s most recent statements expanded on the concept of Cardi B as Fran’s daughter — even going so far as to speculate about race. “Not from me and Mr. Sheffield, I would have to have a man of color,” she stated. “I’m down with the brothers.” Which, like, eek.
But we’d still really like this to happen, along with many other excited Twitter users:
Before you get your hopes up, keep in mind that Drescher’s statement is definitely not official, but considering how many other ’90s shows are getting their millennial makeovers, it seems like a real possibility. After all, there’s been a real resurgence of love for The Nanny these days, thanks in large part to Fran Fine’s chutzpah and style (and, I like to think, her excellent use of Yiddish).
Let us all pray to the network TV gods to make this Fran-Cardi mash-up a reality. We need it now more than ever.
