FBI Showrunner Teases Uncertain Season 8 For Isobel & A Return No One Saw Coming md01

FBI producer and showrunner Mike Weiss promises the series’ Season 7 cliffhanger will be resolved soon. He also confirmed the surprising return of a franchise fan-favorite.

Speaking to TV Line, Weiss said that the Season 8 premiere picks up about three days after the events of the explosive Season 7 finale, and that fans “might not know for a long time” whether Alana De La Garza’s Special Agent Isobel Castille actually survived. “I might not be a total fiend, but I do employ some fiendish writers,” he said. “We wanted you to feel very real fallout from her horrible, life-threatening injuries, and also the kind of existential threat that was posed to the New York Field Office. We did, after all, survive kind of a coup that took place.”

Weiss also went on to note that numerous other characters will be stepping up in Isobel’s absence, including Special Agent Nina Chase (Shantel VanSanten). “We hope to see Nina and touch on [John Boyd’s Special Agent Stuart] Scola and Nina’s relationship. That’s a storyline that we don’t want to abandon just because [Most Wanted] is no longer on. We’re hoping to see Nina in a couple of different ways, but if I’m being totally honest, [Shantel] is an in-demand actress, and we’re still trying to figure everything out.”

Created by Dick Wolf and Craig Turk, FBI premiered on CBS in 2018 and quickly found a foothold with fans looking for a new action-packed procedural. The series features an ensemble cast led by Misy Peregrym as Special Agent Maggie Bell, Zeeko Zaki as Special Agent Omar Adom Zidan, Jeremy Sisto as Assistant Special Agent in Charge Jubal Valentine, and Garza as Special Agent in Charge Isobel Castille.

Since its premiere, FBI has expanded in numerous directions with spinoffs such as FBI: International, FBI: Most Wanted, and the upcoming CIA. The series also introduced VanSanten’s Special Agent Nina Chase, who went on to star in the final two seasons of FBI: Most Wanted. While both FBI: International and FBI: Most Wanted were recently canceled by CBS, that doesn’t mean the franchise will be devoid of any spinoff series for long.

The FBI Universe is Set To Expand on CBS

Fans are currently awaiting the release of CIA, which is set to star Tom Ellis and Nick Gehlfuss as CIA agent Hart Hoston and a currently unnamed FBI agent who are paired up, much to each character’s chagrin. Per the official logline, “CIA is a one-hour crime drama centered on two unlikely partners – a fast-talking, rule-breaking loose cannon CIA case officer (Ellis), and a by-the-book, seasoned and smart FBI agent who believes in the rule of law.”

“When this odd couple is assigned to work out of CIA’s New York Station, they must learn to work together to investigate cases and criminals posing threats on U.S. soil, finding that their differences may actually be their strength,” the description continues.

FBI Season 8 premieres on CBR on Oct. 13.
