NBC Addresses Fans’ Biggest Fears About Ritter’s Exit in Chicago Fire Season 14 md06

Darren Ritter is sadly leaving Chicago Fire in season 14, but the good news is that the premiere eases any worries about how he’ll exit the show. Daniel Kyri, who has played Ritter since season 7, is one of the many cast members leaving the series this year. Unlike the others, though, Kyri is getting the chance to give his character a proper goodbye.

Both Sam Carver and Jack Damon bid Firehouse 51 farewell offscreen, in between the events of the Chicago Fire season 13 finale and season 14. Meanwhile, Kyri reprises his role as Ritter at the beginning of season 14. He’ll only appear in a few episodes, but based on the premiere, he’s making the most of them before leaving Chicago Fire for good.

Ritter Visits Dwayne In New York After He Gets Shot In The Chicago Fire Season 14 Premiere

Dwayne Is Ritter’s Ex-Boyfriend

Ritter starts worrying about his ex-boyfriend, Dwayne Morris (who moved to New York City), when he can’t get a hold of him in Chicago Fire season 14, episode 1. He asks Mouch to see if Trudy knows anything about Dwayne’s radio silence. A few scenes later, Trudy gets back to her husband and informs him that Dwayne got shot while on duty.

Mouch relays the news to Ritter, who hops on the next plane to visit him at the hospital and is evidently distraught. The fan-favorite Chicago Fire character still loves Dwayne, and anyone can see that the firefighter would jump at the chance to get back together with the police officer. Thankfully, Dwayne survives, and Ritter is at his bedside when he wakes up.

Ritter Likely Exits Chicago Fire To Move To New York

Chicago Fire Won’t Kill Off Ritter

When the Chicago Fire season 14 premiere ends, Ritter is still in New York with Dwayne. He’ll undoubtedly return to Chicago, but it might just be to pack up his things. Based on everything that happens in “Kicking Down Doors,” it seems as though the NBC procedural drama will write out Kyri’s character by sending him to New York to be with Dwayne.

Of course, any scenario that involves Ritter leaving Chicago Fire is sad. However, Ritter reuniting with Dwayne is the best way for him to go. Some were worried that the show would kill off Kyri’s character, as the writers have proven time and time again that they’re not afraid to off their main characters.

Thankfully, it looks like Ritter will say goodbye to Firehouse 51 to move to New York and rekindle his romance with Dwayne. He’ll get his happily ever after (and a deserving sendoff). So, while it’s still disappointing to see Ritter go, his Chicago Fire exit could have been much worse.

New episodes of Chicago Fire season 14 air on Wednesdays at 9 pm ET on NBC.
