Days of our Lives viewers were given a chance to grieve when John’s death was written into the story. That gave fans some closure as John died a hero’s death. In real life, John’s alter ego, Drake Hogestyn, passed away in September 2024, and it has continued to weigh heavily on both the cast and fans. One year later, his friend and co-star Stephen Nichols marked the somber anniversary with a heartfelt tribute on social media.
Remembering a Friend
Nichols posted on Instagram: “I remember so vividly — one year ago today — getting the news that Drake had passed. Lisa and I were sitting in a theater in Burbank, having just watched a short film made by one of our #Days directors. In the middle of the Q&A, an email came in. Just like that… Drake was gone.”
He continued, “Even though I knew the day would come, it hit me like a punch. And it still does. Like so many of my colleagues — and everyone lucky enough to know him — I find it hard to believe he’s not here… telling stories, lifting spirits, spreading his love and positivity everywhere he went.” Nichols concluded his statement with, “Drake, you left your mark, buddy. On me, and on the hearts of so many others.
Nichols included a video montage set to Neil Young’s song “Heart of Gold.” In it were photos of Hogestyn and his co-workers throughout the years, and interspersed were handwritten messages of love from the crew. The heartfelt video underscored just how much light Hogestyn brought to their lives.
Fans Share Their Love
The comments section quickly filled with support, as one fan wrote, “There is no greater tribute to a loved one than remembering who they were in life. Drake will never be forgotten, and the words written speak volumes.❤️💜❤️” Another follower added, “So missed…thinking of Drake always. Will be walking the Pancreatic Cancer Foundation walk this Sunday in his memory.”
Others kept it simple but heartfelt. Co-star Cherie Jimenez (Gabi) shared the simple emojis, “♥️,” while Kristian Alfonso (Hope) and Mary Beth Evans (Kayla) followed suit. And one other follower said, “Such a beautiful tribute, I loved him on DAYS. He is so very missed. Rest In Peace, Drake. ” Messages of love and gratitude poured in — proof that Hogestyn’s spirit, both on screen and off, continues to live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
