Since the theater first opened its doors in 1996, Way Off Broadway Dinner Theater has become known for bringing classic musicals, as well as regional and regional premieres to the stage. WOB will add another TV-show-turned-musical to that list this summer when it presents “The Beverly Hillbillies The Musical.”
Auditions for this regional premiere will be held at 7 p.m. March 28 at WOB in Frederick.
Based on the popular 1960s sitcom, in the musical, 17-year-old Elly May Clampett’s father unexpectedly strikes it rich and moves his family from the Ozarks to Beverly Hills, California. Suddenly torn from her pig-farmer fiancé, the beautiful but naïve tomboy is thrown into a world of debutante balls, polo matches, and people mainly concerned with their place in society. Nearly taken in by a couple of scheming ne’er-do-wells, Elly proves traditional country virtue triumphs over slick city vice.
The musical is scheduled to run June 3 to Aug. 21 with performances every Friday and Saturday evening and matinees on the first, third and fifth Sunday of each month. Rehearsals will be held two to three evenings a week, Sunday through Thursday nights. Beginning the week of May 29, rehearsals will be every evening leading up to opening night.
Those interested in auditioning are asked to bring a headshot and resume, as well as 16 bars of prepared music and be ready to sing, read from the script and dance. All roles are open and non-union paying. Those auditioning should be 18 years old or older. No appointments are necessary, and an accompanist will be provided.
