Lance Barber Is Emotional While Filming George’s Funeral In New Young Sheldon Ending Images

New Young Sheldon finale George’s funeral behind-the-scenes images reveal Lance Barber’s emotional state during filming. Devoting the first half of the special one-hour series capper to the aftermath of George’s unexpected death, Young Sheldon season 7, episode 13 is undoubtedly the saddest outing in The Big Bang Theory universe. It showed Sheldon and the rest of the Coopers grapple with the loss of George, which ended with his funeral that was attended by so many familiar faces sharing the clan’s grief.

Days after Young Sheldon‘s ending, the official Young Sheldon TikTok account shares new photos during George’s funeral production, which prominently features Barber being emotional.

The images show Barber getting ready to be in George’s casket, which helped his co-stars to stay in character during filming. It’s worth mentioning that aside from playing the beloved Cooper patriarch, Barber also had a secret George funeral cameo in the Young Sheldon finale as Georgina.

George’s Funeral Episode Emphasized Why Young Sheldon Is So Much Better Than TBBT

Young Sheldon Was At Its Best During George’s Death And Funeral

While it was born from Sheldon’s popularity in The Big Bang Theory, the prequel had become so much bigger than just being the socially inept genius’ origins story in Texas. Diversifying its storytelling in recent years was instrumental in the series finding its own identity and endearing the rest of the Cooper clan to the public. Proof of that success is Georgie and Mandy branching out with their own spinoff series. Before that, however, the Young Sheldon finale, particularly George’s funeral episode, highlighted the best thing about the show, which was its ability to balance comedy and drama.

Compared to it, The Big Bang Theory was more comedic. It had a more traditional sitcom set-up being a multi-cam series, meaning it was filmed in front of a live studio audience and featured canned laughter. However, this also meant that it wasn’t able to fully lean into quieter, more emotional moments, such as George’s funeral outing. The nerd-centric show did tackle death, but its scenes were immediately undercut by jokes to keep things light and fun. Couple that with The Big Bang Theory‘s problematic brand of humor, and it’s easy to see why Young Sheldon is superior at storytelling.

Sheldon’s Young Sheldon finale flashforward appearance features a small detail that emphasizes George’s biggest missed opportunity before dying.

Impressively, The Big Bang Theory finale was also well-beloved despite an uneven final year. Since Young Sheldon ended just recently, only time will tell how they stack up against each other. Arguably, however, the parent show was never able to do anything remotely close to what the prequel did with George’s death and subsequent funeral.
