Ready for new One Chicago adventures? Unfortunately, you’ll have to wait for a bit because the shows aren’t back with new episodes for a couple weeks. Fear not, though: They are returning.
Here’s when you can expect new episodes of Chicago Fire, Chicago Med and Chicago P.D.
When Chicago Med, Chicago P.D., & Chicago Fire return with new episodes
One Chicago Wednesdays are going on a mini-hiatus in March. There won’t be new episodes on Wednesday, March 12 or March 19. But all three shows will air brand-new episodes on March 26 in their normal timeslots, so mark your calendars.
Now is the perfect opportunity to catch up on past seasons, which are all streaming on Peacock.
How the Chicago sets differ
In 2024, Chicago Med‘s S. Epatha Merkerson, Chicago Fire‘s Miranda Rae Mayo, and Chicago P.D.‘s Jason Beghe stopped by The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, where Fallon asked, “You’re in the same universe as each other, so you’ve all appeared on each other’s shows…What do you think the difference is? How do you describe the difference [on set]?”
“I think Miranda has a great way of describing it,” Merkerson said, turning it over to the Chicago Fire actress.
“When you go to Med‘s set, it’s like a sophisticated dinner party, you know what I mean? It’s like people are reading books, everybody’s talking softly,” explained Mayo. “It’s very elegant and mature, and it fits, the way you would be in a hospital.”
“Then you go to P.D., and they’re a little rougher,” Mayo laughed. “They’re kind, everybody’s amazing. They’ll take care of you, but you know, they expect you to be on your P’s and Q’s.”
“And then you go to Fire, and it’s a circus. I mean, truly, we’re loud, we’re laughing, very much like a firehouse… It’s very vibrant,” she added. Echoing that sentiment, Chicago Fire‘s David Eigenberg told NBC Insider in a November 2024 interview, “We have laughed hard. We laugh hard every day on this show. That’s why the crew has stayed. Everybody that could possibly stay stays because it’s a beautiful set.”
“It’s a pretty big [One Chicago] family,” series creator Dick Wolf said in 2019. “Everybody gets along. I mean, there are no squeaky wheels in the cast… I’ve never had anything like it, which is, I think, only visible to the audience by the fact of how good they are together. There are no line counters. There are no ‘Where’s my close-up?’ It’s a remarkably ensemble-like world.”
It was a sad day for Gaffney Chicago Medical Center when Dr. Will Halstead (Nick Gehlfuss) departed the ED after he took responsibility for sabotaging the defective OR 2.0 tech and became persona non grata. But he was also in a rut and decided it was time to move on.
Now, after a two-year absence from the Dick Wolf-produced Chicago Med, Gehlfuss is back in a guest-starring role, rejoining his original cast members Oliver Platt and S. Epatha Merkerson in Season 11. Deadline was first to report the news.
After Gehlfuss left the show, he told Variety, “It was a difficult decision, but ultimately, I felt I’d taken Dr. Halstead as far as I can go with him. Ultimately, I want to develop new, different characters.”
The reason Halstead is returning to Chicago is being kept on the DL. But the fact that Dayton (Sasha Roiz), the genius behind OR 2.0, is no longer running the hospital has to be a factor. But no matter why, fans will hope for an update on how his life in Seattle with Natalie (Torrey DeVitto) and her son Owen is faring.
Gehlfuss starred as Dr. Halstead from the series premiere in 2015 through 2023, leaving after the Season 8 finale. His return follows that of Rachel DiPillo, who left the series in Season 4 and returned in Season 10 to reprise her role as Dr. Charles’ former psych resident, Dr. Sarah Reese.
It will also help fill out the storyline as the show will see the departure of John Earl Jelks as Dr. Dennis Washington and Ashlei Sharpe Chestnut as Dr. Naomi Howard following the Season 10 finale.
Chicago Med will return with all new episodes for Season 11 Oct. 1 at 8 p.m. ET/PT on NBC.
