NBC Just Confirmed the Return Dates for Chicago Med, Chicago P.D., & Chicago Fire

It was a sad day for Gaffney Chicago Medical Center when Dr. Will Halstead (Nick Gehlfuss) departed the ED after he took responsibility for sabotaging the defective OR 2.0 tech and became persona non grata. But he was also in a rut and decided it was time to move on.

Now, after a two-year absence from the Dick Wolf-produced Chicago Med, Gehlfuss is back in a guest-starring role, rejoining his original cast members Oliver Platt and S. Epatha Merkerson in Season 11. Deadline was first to report the news.

After Gehlfuss left the show, he told Variety, “It was a difficult decision, but ultimately, I felt I’d taken Dr. Halstead as far as I can go with him. Ultimately, I want to develop new, different characters.”

The reason Halstead is returning to Chicago is being kept on the DL. But the fact that Dayton (Sasha Roiz), the genius behind OR 2.0, is no longer running the hospital has to be a factor. But no matter why, fans will hope for an update on how his life in Seattle with Natalie (Torrey DeVitto) and her son Owen is faring.

Gehlfuss starred as Dr. Halstead from the series premiere in 2015 through 2023, leaving after the Season 8 finale. His return follows that of Rachel DiPillo, who left the series in Season 4 and returned in Season 10 to reprise her role as Dr. Charles’ former psych resident, Dr. Sarah Reese.

It will also help fill out the storyline as the show will see the departure of John Earl Jelks as Dr. Dennis Washington and Ashlei Sharpe Chestnut as Dr. Naomi Howard following the Season 10 finale.

Chicago Med will return with all new episodes for Season 11 Oct. 1 at 8 p.m. ET/PT on NBC.
