The Final Season of the Cop Show CBS Canceled 3 Times Finally Lands a Streaming Home

In 2017, the gritty CBS police procedural S.W.A.T. premiered, starring Shemar Moore as LAPD Sergeant Daniel “Hondo” Harrelson Jr. Throughout its eight-season run on the network, the show faced cancellation three times before it finally ended its run in 2025.

Finally, after the series finale aired in May, fans can catch up on S.W.A.T. Season 8. The eighth and final season of the show will hit Netflix on Sept. 15.

During its run, S.W.A.T., despite its rocky road to get to eight seasons, gained a loyal following. In May 2023, CBS decided to cancel the show after its sixth season, prompting backlash from fans and its star, Shemar Moore. He took to Instagram at that time, saying that the cancellation “makes no sense.” He added, “We’ve done nothing wrong. We did everything that was asked for,” saying that the show was the most “diverse” series on CBS.

Days later, CBS then walked back its decision and renewed the show for what the network said would be a seventh and final season due to outcry from fans. After its seventh season, S.W.A.T. was given an eighth on the network back in April 2024. However, CBS canceled the show for good in March 2025.

In addition to Season 8 dropping on Netflix soon, S.W.A.T. fans have something else to look forward to in the future, even though the series has been canceled. Shortly after CBS axed the show, a S.W.A.T. spinoff was announced by the network.

Per Deadline, the entire cast of the original S.W.A.T. could wind up appearing in the spinoff, which is titled S.W.A.T. Exiles. Moore is expected to star in the series, reprising his Hondo role. Keith LeGoy, Chair of Sony Pictures Television, teased the show back in June.

“There is a S.W.A.T. family, and that family is important,” LeGoy said. ”We would love to have other family members involved in some way, whether it’s all of them all of the time, some of them some of the time, or something in between. That’s something that we are still figuring out,” he added.

Moore is, thus far, the only original S.W.A.T. actor confirmed for Exiles. He previously talked about the new show and some of the criticism it has already received. “The game has changed. But S.W.A.T. Exiles, baby! Bigger, bolder. S.W.A.T. on steroids,” he said via his Instagram. “Nobody likes change. I understand that. I get it 100%. But without change, you can’t grow. You can’t win without taking your lumps…. It ain’t easy making it in the game of Hollywood. It ain’t. TV shows don’t last eight years anymore.”

S.W.A.T. Exiles will reportedly consist of 10 episodes in its debut season and is from showrunner Jason Ning. He will also executive produce with Neal H. Moritz, Pavun Shetty, James Scura, and Moore.
