Kevin Costner to Star Opposite Jake Gyllenhaal in New Amazon MGM Dramedy After Horizon Box Office Disappointment
Kevin Costner has lined up his next major film role following the underwhelming box office performance of Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1. The Yellowstone star will join forces with Jake Gyllenhaal in the upcoming dramedy Honeymoon With Harry, one of his first projects since stepping away from the hit Paramount Network series.
Costner exited Yellowstone midway through its fifth season to focus on his passion project, the four-part Western epic Horizon, which he directed and starred in. While Chapter 1 failed to find its audience in theaters, Costner is already moving forward with new ventures — both in front of and behind the camera.
In Honeymoon With Harry, Costner plays the would-be father-in-law to Gyllenhaal’s character, who chooses to go on what would have been his honeymoon after his fiancée dies just two days before their wedding. The film is based on the novel by Bart Baker and written by Dan Fogelman, best known as the creator of This Is Us.
The project reunites Fogelman with directors Glenn Ficarra and John Requa, who previously collaborated on Crazy, Stupid, Love, This Is Us, and Paradise. The directing duo’s past credits also include I Love You Phillip Morris, Focus, and Whiskey Tango Foxtrot.
Honeymoon With Harry adds to a growing list of upcoming projects for Costner. While Horizon: Chapter 2 has screened at both the Venice and Santa Barbara film festivals, a wide release is still uncertain due to the financial performance of the first installment. Chapters 3 and 4 of the saga are currently in production and development, respectively.
In addition to his Western epic, Costner has returned to the Civil War era to co-produce the historical spy series The Gray House through his production company, Territory Pictures. He’ll also star in the surfer thriller Headhunters alongside Chloe East and Daniel Zovatto, a film he co-wrote with director Steven Holleran.
Looking ahead, Costner is set to reunite with director Ariel Vromen for an untitled project. The two previously worked together on the 2016 thriller Criminal, which also starred Gary Oldman and Ryan Reynolds.
