For over fifty-two years Suzanne Rogers has portrayed the lovable Maggie Horton on the Peacock streaming soap opera Days of Our Lives. Now, the actress is reflecting and publicly sharing her opinion on her most recent romantic entanglement.
Rogers was recently interviewed by Soaps.com about her time on the soap, and during the conversation she was critical of one story in particular. “The one with Konstantin. That’s the one that I felt didn’t serve the character,” she told Soaps.com
In 2023 Konstantin Meleounis joined the soap opera portrayed by actor John Kapleos. The character was brought on as a once close friend of Victor Kiriakis, Maggie’s late husband, and he made his way into Maggie’s life. Scheming and romancing her in order to get ahold of Victor’s fortune. Konstantin’s plans ultimately resulted in his death, that didn’t stop Rogers from sharing some critical thoughts on the storyline.
Rogers continued to tell Soaps.com, “it was hard for me to come into work and to pretend that I was attracted to this man or maybe falling in love with him.” She felt that it was “too soon” for Maggie to move on. “She just lost the love of her life.”
On the show, Victor passed away in August of 2023, after his portrayer John Aniston’s death in November of 2022. Maggie and Victor had been together since late 2010 when the characters found their way into each others orbit.
The Daytime Emmy Winner didn’t feel like Konstantin was the right fit for her character, sharing, “Now you’re bringing this character in who is a little aggressive. And I felt he was too aggressive. And Maggie is no withering violet.”
Rogers continued to explain her feelings, adding “[she] wasn’t thrilled about the character at all because I love Victor, and all of a sudden, [Konstantin] was trying to take Victor’s place.”
At the time the story was airing it drew widespread criticism with fans echoing Rogers feelings across social media. One user, @JustinInAtlanta, wrote on X (Formerly Twitter) “I’m so glad the Konstantin storyline is over. It was bad from the beginning and never should have happened.”
So, as the story continued, the actress took this to battle to the powers that be, she explained that she “kept fighting” the writers. She was determined to fight for her character explaining, “[I] kept saying, with the scripts, ‘Wait a minute, wait a minute, wait a minute. She just lost the love of her life.’ And they said, ‘You know, this is the script. Do the script.’ So, yes, it was hard,”
This November, Days of Our Lives will celebrate sixty years on air with a previously announced Gala event. Rogers will be joined by a slew of returning faces including Alison Sweeney, Chandler Massey, Greg Vaughan, Melissa Reeves, Mathew Ashford, and more.
Recently rumors circulated online that Rogers would be exiting the soap, but as previously reported by Parade, the actress is an integral part of the shows vision going forward, and with the series recent two-season renewal, she is poised to be at the heart of many storylines to come.
