“What an honor to have gotten to work with Dabney Coleman.”
Kevin Costner has paid tribute to late Yellowstone co-star Dabney Coleman, following his passing at the age of 92.
Coleman played Costner’s on-screen father in the hugely popular Western drama, and was also known for Boardwalk Empire, WarGames, You’ve Got Mail, The Muppets Take Manhattan, and voiced Principal Prickly in Recess.
Following Coleman’s death at his California home last week, Costner shared a photo of the duo on Yellowstone together and wrote: “One of the most heart-wrenching scenes I’ve been a part of.
“What an honor to have gotten to work with Dabney Coleman. May he rest in peace.”
Coleman’s daughter Quincy confirmed the news of his passing to The Hollywood Reporter, issuing a statement that reads: “My father crafted his time here on Earth with a curious mind, a generous heart and a soul on fire with passion, desire and humor that tickled the funny bone of humanity.
“As he lived, he moved through this final act of his life with elegance, excellence and mastery.”
Plenty of other actors also paid tributes on social media after Coleman’s death, including Ben Stiller.
“The great Dabney Coleman literally created, or defined, really – in a uniquely singular way — an archetype as a character actor,” he wrote.
“He was so good at what he did it’s hard to imagine movies and television of the last 40 years without him. Xxx”
Last year it was announced that the show would be ending with the much-awaited second half of the fifth season. Rumors abounded that Costner wants to focus on his Horizon: An American Saga project and of a fallout with creator Taylor Sheridan.
Recently, Costner stated that constant contract changes regarding seasons and the gaps between them were his reasons for leaving.
Yellowstone season 5, part 2, will air on the Paramount Network in November 2024.
