Donnie Wahlberg’s ‘Boston Blue’ Spin-Off to Premiere Sooner Than Expected

The beginning is just around the corner for the Blue Bloods offshoot, Boston Blue, as filming is well underway for the Donnie Wahlberg-led series. While most of us will need to wait until October 17 to catch the project’s big premiere on CBS, a special set of individuals will get to see the debut episode a few days earlier. On October 12, those in attendance at this year’s Mipcom Cannes will be treated to a first-look screening of the pilot episode, with series stars Wahlberg and Sonequa Martin-Green taking the stage once the credits roll for a Q&A session.

For now, we know that Wahlberg’s Detective Danny Reagan will be leaving his family behind in New York City to strike out for a job in law enforcement as part of the Boston squad. It’s there that he’ll meet a new group of relatives who — like the Reagans — have left their stamp on the law enforcement community. First up is Danny’s new partner, Detective Lena Silver (Martin-Green), who is the eldest daughter of a family just like Danny’s. Lena is the granddaughter of Ernie Hudson’s Reverend Peters — a staple in the community who stands behind the pulpit of a historic Baptist Church in the show’s titular city. The Reverend is the father of Boston’s District Attorney, Mae Silver (Gloria Reuben), the grandfather of Superintendent Sarah Silver (Maggie Lawson), and greenhorn patrol cop, Jonah Silver (Marcus Scribner).

Teasing what lies ahead in the pilot, Wahlberg said:

Boston Blue Gets A Surprisingly Early Screening

“The first episode is going to blow people’s minds. I think people are going to be like, ‘Oh my god.’ There’s some twists and turns in the first episode, and then we’re going to continue that. We want to pay respect and honor Blue Bloods, but also… tell some of those [other police family] stories too, and… let Danny explore, you know, be a fish out of water.”

A Reagan Family Affair

While the plot of Boston Blue’s premiere might be up in the air, we know for a fact that another Blue Bloods vet will be joining Wahlberg and ensuring the debut goes off without a hitch. Last month, it was announced that Bridget Moynahan would return to the police-centered universe to reprise her role as Erin Reagan — the younger sister of Wahlberg’s Danny. Meanwhile, another familiar character will make their way into the offshoot, just maybe not in the way that fans wanted, with Danny’s son, Sean, set to join the fold. In the original series, Sean was portrayed by Andrew Terraciano, but the role was recast and given to Mika Amonsen for the spin-off.
