Piper Perabo Breaks Silence on Grey’s Anatomy Season 22 Bombshell — Is Her Character Gone for Good?

Grey’s Anatomy guest star Piper Perabo has discussed her character Jenna’s season 22 fate, after season 21’s explosive finale. Perabo received acclaim for her performance as anguished mother Jenna, who was desperately seeking risky surgery for her sick daughter, Dylan, and threatened the OR with a gas tank and a flint striker when doctors were not doing enough.

The surgery was successful, but while Jenna claimed that the tank was empty, it was apparently not. This resulted in leaked acetylene from the tank igniting in a giant explosion that led to Grey’s Anatomy season 21’s cliffhanger ending, and Perabo has discussed Jenna’s potential season 22 fate.

Per TV Insider, Perabo talked about how she is enjoying her current streak of playing strong, morally questionable women, and how she has been in conversation with the writer’s room about what the outcome of the explosion might be. She hints at the possibility of survival, and of escape, but doesn’t elaborate further.

“It was so fun when they called … I’m on a streak of just like evil, powerful women. I literally was talking with the writers’ room about [that] — because it literally is, like, boom, season out — and so I was talking with them about the immediate aftermath because it’s not totally clear where everyone is in the building.

When you see the explosion, it wasn’t clear which hallway certain people are in… So I talked to them a lot about that immediate moment, and also, is escape possible? Given the chaos of the explosion, could I escape?”

What This Means For Jenna’s Grey’s Anatomy Fate

Grey’s Anatomy season 22 has a lot to wrap up from season 21’s explosive conclusion, and the fates of several people in the hospital are unclear at this point. Perabo’s comments do not give much away, but they suggest she has held conversations about the possibility of returning for season 22 in some capacity, even if it is a small arc.

However, the repercussions of the explosion will need to be explored, and, if Jenna does survive, it is possible she could have taken several lives, albeit accidentally. This provides the possibility for a deeper study of one of the most interesting Grey’s Anatomy season 21 characters, and this might be one of the season’s most prominent plot lines.

At this stage, it’s not clear if Jenna will be back for Grey’s Anatomy season 22, but the chances are good. The character’s arc came to a conclusion of sorts, but there is a lot more to explore here. Perabo seems like she enjoyed playing a morally gray character, and being able to return to Jenna will no doubt be appealing.

Grey’s Anatomy is returning to dramatic cliffhangers, and morally ambiguous characters, which bodes well for the future. Jenna was a great recurring character whose actions, though misguided, present a degree of understanding. And Perabo returning to close out Jenna’s arc should help provide the perfect anchor going into the start of Grey’s Anatomy season 22.
