Virgin River fans, grab a cup of coffee and settle in, because there’s some big news from your favorite fictional town! Even though Season 7 hasn’t premiered yet, Netflix has already announced that Virgin River will return for Season 8. Not only is this an early renewal, it also marks a major milestone: Virgin River is now the longest-running original scripted show in Netflix history.
The surprise news came in early July, just after filming wrapped on Season 7—and fans weren’t the only ones excited. Alexandra Breckenridge, who plays Mel, shared the update on Instagram with a short but sweet caption: “#virginriver keeps on keeping on!” That it does!
As for what’s ahead, Season 7 will follow newlyweds Mel and Jack as they begin planning for their future together and building a family. Doc and Hope will be busy too, fighting to protect the town’s beloved clinic and all the people it serves. Netflix also revealed that both upcoming seasons—7 and 8—will have 10 episodes each. Part of Season 7 was even filmed in Mexico, which means we might get a few fresh backdrops mixed in with the usual stunning mountain views.
There’s no release date for either season just yet, but it’s likely that Season 7 will premiere sometime in late 2025. With 20 total new episodes on the way, there’s plenty to look forward to over the next couple of years! And in the meantime, you can rewatch your favorite moments, read up on fan theories, and maybe even plan a trip to see some of the Virgin River filming locations in British Columbia.
Because no matter what Mel and Jack are going through, the town of Virgin River always feels like the coziest place to come back to.
