A Familiar face returns: Original Blue Bloods Star joins Boston Blue’s Big Premiere

Ask and you shall receive! Fans who were hoping to see more familiar faces in CBS’s upcoming Blue Bloods spinoff series, Boston Blue, won’t be disappointed. Series star Donnie Wahlberg just confirmed via social media that a beloved Blue Bloods original cast member will be joining him in the new show.

On July 18, Wahlberg took to Instagram to share a photo with Bridget Moynahan, announcing her guest appearance in Boston Blue’s premiere episode and revealing that she’ll also direct an episode in the season. Moynahan is best known for previously playing Assistant District Attorney Erin Reagan on the hit series Blue Bloods, a role that earned her a loyal fan base. Erin is also the younger sister of Wahlberg’s Danny Reagan character.

While Wahlberg didn’t give any hints in his Instagram post about what viewers can expect from Moynahan’s return, we’ve already started imagining how the on-screen reunion will go. The last time we saw Danny in Blue Bloods, he was still in New York City. In Boston Blue, the former NYPD detective has relocated to Boston to reconnect with his son Sean, who’s now a patrol officer with the Boston PD. Danny ends up joining the Boston Police Department, where he’s partnered with Detective Lena Silver, who comes from a respected Boston law enforcement family.

Mika Amonsen (Pachinko, Thanksgiving) portrays Sean Reagan, while Star Trek: Discovery’s Sonequa Martin-Green takes on the role of Lena Silver. Andrew Terraciano previously played Sean on Blue Bloods, but the character was recast for the spinoff. Also in the Boston Blue cast are Gloria Reuben as Mae Silver, Ernie Hudson as Reverend Peters, Maggie Lawson as Sarah Silver, and Marcus Scribner as Jonah Silver. It’ll be interesting to see if Moynahan’s Erin character will get to interact with any of these new characters in the series premiere.
