‘NCIS: Origins’ Boss Teases a Major Gibbs Scene Coming to Season 2

This fall can’t come any faster for fans of the hit NCIS spin-off, NCIS: Origins, as it makes its highly anticipated return in October. Chronicling the early career years of young Leroy Jethro Gibbs, before the events of the original series, the procedural was renewed for a second season in February before its nineteen-episode debut season came to an end on April 28. Now with Season 2 fast approaching, many are curious about what’s next for Gibbs, who, as seen in the Season 1 finale, killed Pedro Hernandez, the man responsible for his family’s death.

Gibbs, portrayed by Austin Stowell in NCIS: Origins, experienced a couple of firsts in Season 1 with even more to come this fall. Speaking with TVLine, co-showrunner Gina Lucita Monreal has teased a significant scene involving another first for the character: a proper interrogation coming up next season, even though viewers may have seen him already conduct some questioning in previous episodes. Monreal shared:

“One thing we haven’t shown yet, that I’m really excited for, is Gibbs’ first interrogation. We’ve seen him question people, outside in the field and in the elevator, but we haven’t seen him yet in interrogation properly grilling somebody, and I’m excited to see what that first will look like.”

NCIS: Origins Season 2 is expected to premiere on Tuesday, October 14, on CBS, airing in the 9 pm time slot, following the original NCIS series. Stowell is expected to return along with fellow series regulars: Kyle Schmid as Mike Franks, Tyla Abercrumbie as Mary Jo, Diany Rodriguez as Vera Strickland, and Caleb Foote as Bernard “Randy” Randolf. Meanwhile, it remains uncertain if Mariel Molino will return as Cecilia “Lala” Dominguez, considering the events of the Season 1 finale that left her fate uncertain after a car accident.

‘NCIS: Origins’ Showrunners Tease A More Active Gibbs in Season 2

With Gibbs still in the early phase of his career at the NIS, he has a lot to learn, which ultimately leads him to head the D.C. office successfully. But for now, he’s a probie who, according to co-showrunners David J. North and Monreal, will take a more active stance in Season 2 of NCIS: Origins, including during investigations. Explaining how Gibbs’ evolution would come about, North said:

“We’re inching our way there, definitely, in a way that we think is honest for the character. I mean, just take the fact that, in Season 1, we know Gibbs’ gut was churning a little bit about Bugs [Jared Bankens] and thinking, ‘Maybe there’s more to this story?’ But Gibbs didn’t go down that path, he didn’t gnaw at Franks and say, ‘Hey, my gut…’ — and he learned in the end he was right. Those are all stepping stones toward becoming the Gibbs that we met in 2003.”

Season 1 of NCIS: Origins is streaming on Paramount+. Tune in to CBS this fall to see what’s next in Season 2, and do stay tuned to Collider for further information.
