HBO Greenlights Big Bang Theory Spinoff Centered on Stuart — and the Synopsis Is Surprisingly Bizarre

The Big Bang Theory (the show, not the actual theory) is rather divisive among the geeky and nerdy folks in the world. The long-running sitcom made some people feel seen in mainstream cultureOpens in a new tab, while others raised an eyebrow at how it portrays nerds. Either way, The Big Bang Theory is a part of pop culture history, ending in 2019 with a whopping 12 seasons under its belt. And it did give fans a prequel spinoff, Young Sheldon, which is already six seasons into its story. Obviously, people dig this universe. As of April 2023, another spinoff of The Big Bang Theory named Stuart Fails to Save the Universe was in the works. Now, over two years later, Variety reports that this series got the greenlight from HBO.

There’s casting news for this The Big Bang Theory spinoff as well. Stuart Fails to Save the Universe is adding Brian Posehn (Bert Kibbler, a geologist at Caltech), Lauren Lapkus (Denise, the assistant manager of Stuart’s comic book store and his eventual love interest), and Kevin Sussman (comic book store owner Stuart Bloom) to its cast. Still, we will have to see if the show gets an official greenlight to come to our TV screens.

If you’re wondering whether Jim Parsons will return and reprise his role as Sheldon Cooper, it is not likely. But it is also not impossible, according to Parsons himself. According to DeadlineOpens in a new tab, Jim Parsons talked about a possible Big Bang Theory return on Who’s Talking To Chris Wallace? recently.

“As we sit here now, no, but I also I would I never say never to anything, because life just changes so much,” said Parsons. “You know, one of the things is that it was so special as what it was as what it is. And they call it lightning in a bottle for a reason, and you can be certain it wouldn’t be that. And so why would we be doing it? I don’t know that that’s how I feel on that right now. But like I say, God willing, life is very long.”

Stuart is aided in this quest by his girlfriend Denise (Lapkus), geologist friend Bert (Posehn), and quantum physicist/all-around pain in the ass Barry Kripke (Bowie).
