Tom Selleck’s Long-Running Cop Drama Finds New Life on Streaming After Cancellation

Fans of Tom Selleck’s hit police procedural series Blue Bloods are showing their love for the show on the streaming charts. It was recently canceled after 14 seasons and nearly 300 episodes.

FlixPatrol reports that Blue Bloods is #10 on Paramount+’s Top 10 TV Shows in the United States for Jul. 12, 2025. It’s also performing well globally and is in the Top 10 in over twenty countries with an average ranking of 7.1. Blue Bloods starred Tom Selleck as NYPD’s Commissioner Frank Reagan, the patriarch of a family with a long history of working in law enforcement. Other cast members included Donnie Wahlberg, Bridget Moynahan, Will Estes and Len Cariou.

Blue Bloods was a ratings hit for CBS during its original run, with the lowest viewer count through its first seven seasons being 8.88 million (an episode which faced stiff competition from the 2016 World Series.) From its eighth season onwards, Blue Bloods’ popularity began to wane, but it still ranked among one of the most watched programs in key demographics. In 2023, CBS announced that the show was cancelled, and its fourteenth season would be its last.

The final season of Blue Bloods premiered in February 2024, with the series finale airing on Dec. 13. Shortly after the series concluded, CBS revealed that it had ordered a new spinoff series — Boston Blue — which would take Blue Bloods’ time slot in the upcoming Fall programming. Donnie Wahlberg will reprise his role as Danny Reagan, with the new series focusing on his character heading off to Boston and working for their police department.

While Boston Blue is set to have its own story that sees Danny going off on his own, Wahlberg recently revealed that there will be plenty of opportunities for fans of Blue Bloods to potentially see fan-favorite characters returning, like Tom Selleck’s Frank. “New York and Boston are really close. They’re not that far apart,” Wahlberg hinted. Boston Blue is currently set for an Oct. 17 release.

Boston Blue Recasts Major Blue Bloods Character

As Boston Blue’s release gets closer, more details about the new Blue Bloods spinoff are emerging – including the fact that one of the returning Reagan family members has been recast. It was revealed that Sean (Danny’s youngest son) would appear in Boston Blue as a main character after being featured in a recurring role in Blue Bloods. Andrew Terraciano originated the role, but Mika Amonsen (Reacher) will reportedly continue the role in the new series.

It’s also been reported that Boston Blue will explain that Sean relocated to Boston in an effort to forge his own path outside his family’s shadow. With Danny following and taking a position in Boston, the show will have a father/son duo dynamic, allowing the two characters to have a bond that wasn’t explored in-depth in the original Blue Bloods series. It remains to be seen if any other Reagan family members will make special appearances in the new spinoff series.
