Young Sheldon Star Reveals Jim Parsons’ Advice for Playing Sheldon Cooper

Iain Armitage reflects on the advice given to him by Jim Parsons for playing Sheldon Cooper.

Beyond possible appearances in the upcoming spinoff, Iain Armitage is wrapping up his run playing Sheldon Cooper with the current seventh season of Young Sheldon. The Big Bang Theory prequel series. The high acclaim and strong ratings garnered along the way prove that Armitage was successful in playing the character previously portrayed by Jim Parsons in The Big Bang Theory.

At the start of Young Sheldon, Armitage was coached a bit by Parsons on how to best play the Sheldon Cooper character. Per Variety, Armitage reflected on the advice given to him. The young actor also commented on Parsons’ return as the adult Sheldon in the Young Sheldon series finale, which will see him joined by Mayim Bialik who’s also reprising her role as Amy.

“Mostly, [Parsons’ advice was] just teaching me how to do the accent and the way Sheldon looks at the world,” Armitage said. “Saying that Sheldon seeks order and has a hard time with social interaction, how it can sort of be disordered. For Sheldon, as incredible and genius as he is, it doesn’t come that easy for him. He can do all this wonderful stuff and he’s got such an incredible brain, but some sentiments for him can be completely alien. It is pretty fascinating and an interesting juxtaposition for both a character and a person.”

On seeing Parsons back in the role of Sheldon Cooper for the Young Sheldon finale, Armitage added, “It was incredible. It felt like a reunion, getting to see them back together. They know each other so well and act so well together. They knew each other’s cues, which was wonderful to see. I think Mister Jim and Miss Mayim both quite enjoyed it, so that’s nice.”

“It was definitely surreal,”Armitage continued, describing how it felt to see Cooper reprising the role. “I think it was weird and cool and interesting. He said that in a good way, he felt like a guest on our set. I was happy that it didn’t feel too weird or out of the ordinary for him. That’s all I can ask for.”

Young Sheldon’s Story Will Continue

Not everyone is ready to say goodbye to Young Sheldon, which includes some of the stars of the series. The story isn’t over just yet, however, as a spinoff series is already in the works. The new spinoff will serve as a direct sequel series for Young Sheldon, focusing primarily on Georgie (Montana Jordan) and Mandy (Emily Osment) as they start their own family.

The series finale of Young Sheldon will air on May 16, 2024.
