đŸ”” ‘Blue Bloods’ Spinoff Begins Filming as Wahlberg Hints at Big Returns

Progress is moving quickly on the eagerly awaiting Blue Bloods spinoff, Boston Blue. Following the announcements of several new cast members, we have now learned that production is officially launched.

Series star Donnie Wahlberg was the first to break the news on social media, sharing a photo from the first table read and expressing his excitement for this new installment in the franchise. He shared these juicy deets via his Instagram stories, which have now been deleted.

However, TVLine was able to quickly capture a screenshot of the post. Although Wahlberg is not in the picture he shared, his name card and the pilot script are shown. Fellow co-star Sonequa Martin-Green’s name card is also shown in the background. Overlaying the image, Wahlberg included the words “A new chapter,” accompanied by a blue heart emoji.

Boston Blue will indeed be a new chapter for Wahlberg as he’ll see his Detective Danny Reagan character leaving behind the familiar streets of New York City and his tight-knit family to take on a new role with the Boston Police Department. Danny will have to adjust to unfamiliar surroundings while tackling complex cases along with his new partner, Lena Silver, played by Martin-Green.

The cast also features Gloria Reuben as Mae Silver, Ernie Hudson as Reverend Peters, Maggie Lawson as Sarah Silver, Marcus Scribner as Jonah Silver, and Mika Amonsen as Sean Reagan. Andrew Terraciano portrayed the role of Sean in Blue Bloods, but he was recast for the spinoff. Brandon Sonnier and Brandon Margolis serve as the creators.

Blue Bloods star Donnie Wahlberg drops major news on Tom Selleck's return | HELLO!

On July 10, Wahlberg reposted a video from a fan on his Instagram stories that shows him announcing that he’s on set in Toronto for his first day shooting Boston Blue. So, it appears that production actually started on July 10 or somewhere around this time. According to TVLine, the cast and crew will primarily film in Toronto, with some scenes also being shot in Boston.

While no other original Blue Bloods cast members have been added to the spinoff’s cast besides Wahlberg, fans are hoping to see surprise appearances or guest spots from more familiar faces. In fact, this just might happen. In the comment section of an Instagram post from March 25, a fan expressed a desire to see more than just Wahlberg return for the spinoff. Wahlberg then responded by saying, “tune in,” and included a wink emoji. Could he be teasing some Blue Bloods cameos? It appears so!

It would be really great if the spinoff could get Tom Selleck to reprise his role as Danny’s father, Frank Reagan, even for a quick cameo. However, that all depends on whether Selleck isn’t busy with other commitments or projects and if he’d even want to return to the role. Fingers crossed!
