The Blue Bloods universe is officially expanding, and momentum is building fast. With a growing cast and filming now underway, the highly anticipated spinoff Boston Blue has taken its first major steps forward and no one’s more excited than Donnie Wahlberg.
Wahlberg, who reprises his role as Detective Danny Reagan, broke the news himself via Instagram Stories, sharing a behind-the-scenes peek at the show’s first table read. Though he wasn’t in the photo, sharp-eyed fans quickly spotted his name card and the pilot script. Sitting nearby? Co-star Sonequa Martin-Green’s name card signaling the beginning of a bold new partnership. Wahlberg captioned the image simply but powerfully: “A new chapter 💙.”
That new chapter sees Danny Reagan trading the streets of New York for Boston, where he joins the Boston Police Department and pairs up with a new partner, Detective Lena Silver (played by Martin-Green). The spinoff follows Danny as he adjusts to unfamiliar territory, both professionally and personally, while tackling new cases in a city that plays by its own rules.
Joining Wahlberg and Martin-Green is a strong supporting cast: Gloria Reuben as Mae Silver, Ernie Hudson as Reverend Peters, Maggie Lawson as Sarah Silver, Marcus Scribner as Jonah Silver, Mika Amonsen as Sean Reagan (replacing Andrew Terraciano from the original series)
The series is created by Blacklist alums Brandon Sonnier and Brandon Margolis, with Wahlberg stepping into this next phase of the Reagan saga under their creative guidance.
On July 10, Wahlberg reposted a fan-shot video on Instagram, confirming that filming had officially kicked off not in Boston, as many expected, but primarily in Toronto, with select scenes also to be filmed in the show’s namesake city.
While Wahlberg remains the only confirmed Blue Bloods cast member returning full-time, speculation is running high about potential cameos from franchise favorites. Back in March, when a fan on Instagram pleaded for more familiar faces to join him in Boston Blue, Wahlberg coyly replied, “tune in 😉.”
Of course, the biggest wish among fans? A cameo from Tom Selleck, reprising his iconic role as Frank Reagan. Nothing has been confirmed yet, but Wahlberg’s subtle hints have everyone hopeful. Whether it’s a full scene or a passing appearance, a Frank-and-Danny reunion would send longtime viewers over the moon.
For now, fans can only wait and watch as Boston Blue takes shape and hope that this new chapter is every bit as powerful, emotional, and unforgettable as the original.
