Chicago Fire fans can breathe a sigh of relief—Chief Dom Pascal isn’t going anywhere. Series showrunner Andrea Newman has officially confirmed that Dermot Mulroney will reprise his role in Season 14, bringing a sense of stability to Firehouse 51 during a time of major transition.
Speculation had swirled around Pascal’s future following the emotional Season 13 finale and the recent departure of longtime Chief Wallace Boden. As Christopher Herrmann considered stepping into the Chief role, the firehouse’s leadership seemed uncertain. However, the finale delivered a surprising and heartfelt twist: Herrmann ultimately withdrew from the promotion, allowing Pascal to remain in charge while Mouch took on the role of acting lieutenant.
Speaking to TV Insider, Newman explained that the decision to keep Pascal in place was rooted in a pivotal emotional moment during the season—Monica Pascal’s funeral. The outpouring of support from the Firehouse 51 family deeply affected Pascal, particularly Mouch’s moving reassurance that the crew wasn’t just a team, but a family. That moment cemented Pascal’s connection to 51, inspiring him to stay and lead.
“He really felt like one of them after that,” Newman said. “It was the kind of loyalty and unity that made Firehouse 51 special—and it’s what convinced Pascal that this is where he belongs.”
The confirmation of Pascal’s return comes as Chicago Fire undergoes several cast changes. Series regulars Daniel Kyri (Darren Ritter) and Jake Lockett (Sam Carver) will not return for Season 14, marking the end of two key arcs. In contrast, Pascal’s continued presence offers fans a reassuring anchor amid the change.
With Boden gone and Herrmann stepping back, Chief Pascal’s steady leadership could be just what Firehouse 51 needs. As Season 14 takes shape, viewers can look forward to seeing how he rises to the challenge—and whether the bonds forged in tragedy can carry the team into a new era.
