Regé-Jean Page is stepping back into the spotlight — and possibly into a familiar romantic lead. Apple is developing a TV series adaptation of Funny You Should Ask, Elissa Sussman’s 2022 best-selling novel. Page is attached to executive produce and likely star, according to Deadline.
Tomorrow Studios, in partnership with ITV Studios, is developing the series. Page will produce through his company, A Mighty Stranger, alongside his producing partner Emily Brown.
The Love Story With a Meta James Bond Twist
“Funny You Should Ask” follows a young journalist with big ambitions who lands an interview with a major movie star, only to reunite with him a decade later and face the unresolved feelings between them.
Page is set to play a movie star who takes on the role of James Bond — a casting choice sure to spark even more fan speculation. Since his breakout as Simon Basset in the first season of Netflix’s “Bridgerton,” Page has been a popular pick among fans to step into the 007 tuxes.
Who’s Behind the Project
Deadline reports that the script is being written by Rachel Alter, who will also serve as executive producer alongside Page and Brown. Additional executive producers include Robin Schwartz and Carolyn Daucher, as well as Marty Adelstein, Becky Clements, and Alissa Bachner of Tomorrow Studios. The adaptation comes under Schwartz’s first-look deal with Tomorrow Studios.
A Return to Romance for Page
If the series moves forward, “Funny You Should Ask” will mark Page’s first return to television since his breakout role on “Bridgerton.” It would also be a full-circle moment, bringing him back to the romance genre that helped launch his global stardom.
Before “Bridgerton”, Page took on a leading role in ABC’s “For the People” and later appeared in films like “Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves”, “The Gray Man”, and most recently, Steven Soderbergh’s spy thriller “Black Bag”.
Will We Ever See Page in ‘Bridgerton’ Again
While Bridgerton shifts its focus to a new couple each season, many original cast members have continued to appear throughout the series. But Regé-Jean Page, who played the beloved Duke of Hastings, has never returned. Earlier this year, when asked once again if he’d consider a comeback, Page kept honorable things.
“I’m very happy to support everyone who’s in the show,” he told Entertainment Tonight. “Everyone’s finding fantastic success, both with the show and personal projects. I’m just super happy to say that.”
Page has gracefully moved on from “Bridgerton”, focusing on new opportunities and making it clear he’s excited to explore roles beyond the beloved Netflix series — even as fans continue to hope for his return.
