During Season 16, a promising contestant—known for their charm and skill—began exhibiting increasingly erratic behavior behind the scenes. Ramsay initially believed it was stress. But when kitchen equipment went missing and accusations of theft surfaced, tensions escalated fast.
One night, the chef locked themselves in the walk-in freezer and refused to come out for nearly an hour. Ramsay, furious but concerned, demanded production stop filming and helped break the door open. What he saw shocked him: the contestant curled up in a corner, sobbing uncontrollably.
In a rare move, Ramsay pulled them from the competition entirely and offered to pay for professional help. The episode was heavily edited to protect the chef’s identity. But according to insiders, Ramsay told producers afterward, “I can’t do this anymore if we’re breaking people.”
He ultimately stayed—but that season changed him. Since then, Ramsay has implemented stricter psychological screening and personally reviews contestant reports before every season. “I want fire in their bellies,” he later said. “Not scars on their minds.”
