After escaping from the backyard, a pet pooch surprised his owners at their front door by returning to ring the family’s doorbell camera.
Kota, 9 months, recently broke out of his yard in Crestview, Florida, and was gone for 30 minutes before he returned and used the home’s Ring doorbell camera “multiple times” to get his owners’ attention.
In footage provided to PEOPLE by Ring, Kota walks towards the front door and starts jumping up and ringing the doorbell a number of times with what appears to be his nose. The door then opens, and the pup is let inside.
“Kota’s a digger! He dug a hole under the fence and got through the gate, then realized no one was around, which led him to ring the doorbell,” his owner, Ring customer Osric, tells PEOPLE of the dog’s escape on June 17. “He likes to be outside, so we don’t mind him taking a few laps around back. I had a feeling to go check in on him, but ultimately, it was the Ring notification that led me to find out he escaped.”
Oric was “totally shocked and happy I got him before he got hurt or lost,” he shares, adding that he found Kota’s actions “funny.”

“It was definitely unexpected,” Osric tells PEOPLE of the dog’s doorbell ringing skills. “We found it funny and so cool that he knew to press the Ring doorbell multiple times to get our attention.”
“I have rewatched the video multiple times with family and friends,” Osric continues. “We’ve gotten a lot of fun and positive feedback both for the situation and Kota, alongside praise for Ring.”

Osric adds that Kota has “scratched” at the doorbell before and rang it by accident, but the pet parent believes that the dog has the button figured out now and “did use it to get me to the door.”
As for whether or not Kota has made any other great escapes since the incident, Osric reveals, “As of now, he has not escaped since he’s bigger, and he has not needed to ring the doorbell. However, I’m sure he will if need be in the future or when he feels like hearing the chime!”

“Kota is as happy as can be,” Osric adds. “He loves our family and is the true definition of a hilarious goofball.”
