Ghosts has us seeking out more answers following their season finales. We never know who might get the unlucky “suck-off,” and apparently, neither do the comedy’s stars. Like the rest of us, they’re in for the spiritual ride, which makes it all the more exciting because it hinders the spoiler alerts.
Season 4’s finale saw Elias Woodstone—the original Woodstone Manor homeowner—rise from the Underworld and snap up Jay’s soul in exchange for a good restaurant review. This scenario will shift to season 5, and while I have no doubt that Jay’s unlikely to die and become one of the ghosts, Elias is likely going to hatch ways to get him to die.
It’s going to be a field trip for Sam and the ghosts to keep Jay from getting into deathly encounters, but knowing how energetic and sometimes doesn’t think things through, it’s going to be easier said than done. The aspiring celebrity chef isn’t ready for the Spirit World yet, but when he is, he’ll finally get to see the ghosts physically, and not just go by his wife’s contact.
Circling back to the finale details regarding why the cast doesn’t get the information until the last few episodes, Rose McIver, who portrays Sam, explained the reasoning per an interview with The Hollywood Reporter on June 18.
“There are pragmatic questions that I ask, ‘Are we doing a direct pickup? Can I get a haircut or not?’ They don’t tend to tell us much too far in advance. I think they know we’ve got a lot of loose lips amongst us. Just yesterday, I started fishing around in the group chat. They threw us a little bit of chum about a couple of teases for the first couple of episodes back this year. But, no, we are all kind of anxiously waiting as much as the fans are to know how we dig ourselves out of this one.”
McIver’s logical response makes the fans even more connected with Ghosts and its cast because it reflects that everyone’s all in the same boat regarding knowing about the show’s secrets. The less that’s known about the season finale, the better. The audience has something to look forward to, and it keeps them attached throughout. And in a world where spoilers are evident thanks to leaks and social media, it’s refreshing.
While knowing the material beforehand makes one emotionally prepared, it also eliminates the fun element of surprise and lowers the chances of tuning in, as the episode has already been watched. Broadcast shows heavily rely on ratings, regardless of whether they’re popular on streamers. It’ll be unfair if Ghosts didn’t receive the deserved viewership due to spoilers.
Some behind-the-scenes and spoilers need to be kept in the vaults until the time comes for it to ascend. Otherwise, they lose their spirit and remain dormant.
Ghosts will return for season 5 on CBS in the fall 2025.
