While Ghosts season 5 has more than one storyline to wrap up, the CBS sitcom’s showrunner has promised the series will likely explain the only remaining major question about the spirits. The ghosts of CBS’s Ghosts are the sitcom’s main characters, alongside Sam and Jay, the living owners of Woodstone Mansor. Ghosts season 4 gave every main character a chance to shine, and Thor, Sass, Isaac, Hetty, Alberta, Flower, Pete, and Trevor will all receive story focus and screen time in season 5 too.
That said, some characters are likely to have more prominent storylines than others. In TVLine’s regular column Matt’s Inside Line, Matt Webb Mitovich spoke to Ghosts co-showrunner Joe Wiseman and the creative revealed that season 5 will almost certainly reveal the cause of Sass’s death. Per Wiseman:
“We’re not promising, but it is something we’ve talked about a lot… It does seem like every season, we reveal some of the big mysteries — what their powers are, and how they died — and as you mentioned, I think the last one is Sas’ death, so… Probably.”
Why Ghosts Season 5 Needs To Finally Explain How Sass Died
Sass’s Death Is The Biggest Lingering Mystery In The CBS Sitcom
Wiseman is right to note that Sass’s death is perhaps the biggest remaining mystery in the world of Ghosts, now that almost all the ghosts know their powers and the audience knows most of their backstories. In Ghosts season 4, episode 12, “It’s the End of the World as We Know It and What Were We Talking About?”, viewers even found out that the basement ghosts could spread a non-lethal dose of cholera to the living and, a few episodes later on, in “St. Hetty’s Day,” Hetty discovered her power.
The story of Sass’s death deserves time to shine in the spotlight without distraction.
As such, the show is running low on major remaining lore revelations. This means it is a perfect time to reveal the cause of Sass’s death, although Jay’s Ghosts season 5 storyline should take precedence first. Retrieving his soul from Elias is more urgent than finding out Sass’s backstory, and the story of Sass’s death deserves time to shine in the spotlight without distraction.
Our Take On Ghosts Season 5 Revealing The Cause of Sass’s Death
Explaining Sass’s Death Would Give The Character Even More Screen Time
Sass received more screen time in Ghosts season 4 than he did in earlier outings as he romanced the Hollywood screenwriter Joan’s ghost. His struggles with his multi-century virginity and his attempts to choose between pursuing his lifetime crush Shiki and his new paramour Joan were compelling, meaning the show must now capitalize on his expanded role.
While there are fan theories about how Sass died, Ghosts season 5 finally explaining his fate in no uncertain terms would be a welcome surprise. This would also leave Ghosts with one less unexplained mystery, making the world of the sitcom feel more cohesive.
