The Only Way to Resolve FBI: International’s Cliffhanger: Wes Mitchell Must Leave the Fly Team

When FBI: International was canceled, there was hope that the writers had time to craft some closure for various characters. Instead, the FBI: International season 4 finale left us with multiple cliffhangers, and the worst was for Cameron Vo (Vinessa Vidotto) and Andre Raines (Carter Redwood). The two characters’ careers were in the balance, as they both fought for the same promotion.

There is no perfect ending for the two of them if only one gets the promotion. However, if FBI: International season 5 was going to happen, one of those characters, at least, would need to stick around with the Fly Team. The perfect ending would have been for Wes Mitchell (Jesse Lee Soffer) to leave the Fly Team, and the introduction of his half-sister opened the door for that to happen.

Only 1 Could Get The GS-14 Promotion In FBI: International

The FBI spinoff finally brought up the opportunity for Raines and Vo to get a promotion, but there was only one GS-14 position open. That position would also mean going back to the United States, leaving the Fly Team behind, and while the two initially didn’t want that, they knew they wanted to further their careers. That meant going up against each other, and viewers hoped to learn who got it during the FBI: International series finale.

Arguably, Vo showed more leadership qualities throughout her time on FBI: International, so it should have been her; however, that would have meant her leaving the Fly Team, and that wasn’t the ending any of us wanted.

In the end, the finale left us still with questions. As Vo and Raines stood, the camera panned down to them holding hands. We didn’t get a resolution, and all we can do now is guess which of them got the promotion. Arguably, Vo showed more leadership qualities throughout her time on FBI: International, so it should have been her, but that would have meant her leaving the Fly Team, which wasn’t the ending any of us wanted for her.

Both Raines & Vo Needed To Get A Promotion

As the only two remaining original members of the Fly Team, both Raines and Vo deserved a happy ending in the FBI: International season 4 finale. That meant both of them needed to get a promotion, but there was only one open, and while they agreed to stay friends, only one could move up the career ladder. The only way to make it possible for both of them to further their careers would be for Mitchell to leave the team completely.

Vo had made it clear to Mitchell the main reason she didn’t take over when Scott Forrester (Luke Kleintank) left was because she wasn’t a GS-14 yet, despite us wanting to see Vo take over. With that promotion and the decision she was ready to move up the career ladder, she would have been in the perfect position to fill the empty spot as Mitchell left. That would have also allowed Raines to get his happy ending with the promotion elsewhere.

Mitchell Has New Priorities In The United States

Of course, there would initially be questions about why Mitchell would leave the Fly Team when he had just joined. He made a huge life move by leaving the United States to start afresh in Hungary, so he wouldn’t just stay for a year and then decide to take another job in the U.S. It wasn’t like David Zaleski (John Emmet Tracy) was still trying to find a way to imprison him or fire him, so there wasn’t a major threat to his career.

However, Mitchell’s life had changed by the end of the Dick Wolf universe series, as he learned that he had a younger half-sister. After deciding he wanted to meet her, his priorities in life would likely change. Now he had someone else he needed to help take care of, and while his sister had a mom in her life, she needed a male figure to look up to, and Mitchell could be that. It would make sense for him to choose to leave the Fly Team and get a job back in the United States, opening the door for a new Fly Team leader in FBI: International.
