The ending of Matlock season 1 will have a big impact on Madeline’s marriage to Edwin, according to executive producer Jennie Snyder Urman. After a successful first outing, the CBS legal drama ended with many questions. That’s especially true for Madeline “Matty” Matlock (Kathy Bates) and her husband Edwin (Sam Anderson), who look like they each may be staring down a difficult conflict for Matlock season 2.
In comments to TVLine, Urman shared what was next for Madeline and Edwin. The showrunner and executive producer talked about what it was like to arrive at a point in a relationship where negotiation seemed no longer possible, comparing it to a situation in a legal case where both sides arrived at a seemingly insurmountable impasse. In the quote below, Urman also alludes to things that Matty gave up in the past:
“I mean, it’s a 50-year marriage, right? So they have to figure it out, and that’s what I’m interested in.
“But, how do you solve something in a long-term marriage when you say, ‘I want X and I want Y’ and they definitely don’t want X? Like, what happens? It’s the same thing as in a legal case when you get to a negotiable and you’re each non-negotiable. You still have to negotiate. So I’m interested in seeing how they get through that and what it leads to. [It] comes with things that cost Maddie, too, because you have to give things up in negotiations.”
