Why We Need This ‘NCIS: Los Angeles’ Character to Make a Comeback in the Franchise

After running for more than twenty years, the NCIS franchise has seen its fair share of significant character exits. One of the most memorable was the departure of Leroy Jethro Gibbs, famously portrayed by Mark Harmon, whose presence was almost synonymous with the original series and whose goodbye brought tears to cast and fans alike. But when NCIS: Los Angeles ended in 2023, it wasn’t just one agent we lost—we said farewell to several beloved characters who were central to this spin-off. Except for one.

Following the show’s conclusion, LL Cool J’s character, Agent Sam Hanna, transitioned to NCIS: Hawai’i, appearing as a guest star for two seasons, and he’s confirmed to return to the main NCIS series in Season 22, Episode 18. Meanwhile, Harmon also reappears in NCIS: Origins, with Austin Stowell portraying a younger version of Gibbs. With these returns, fans hold hope that other cherished NCIS: Los Angeles agents might reemerge elsewhere in the NCIS universe—most notably, Marty Deeks (played by Eric Christian Olsen).

Marty Deeks Was One of the Best Parts of NCIS: Los Angeles

Marty Deeks began as a guest character in Season 1, undercover infiltrating a drug ring connected to Sam Hanna. But he quickly captured viewers’ affection, earning a regular spot by Season 2. Known for his sarcastic humor and easygoing nature, Deeks became the show’s comedic relief, perfectly balancing the darker, intense cases the team faced. His presence added a charming lightness to the series that fans really appreciated.

But Marty’s appeal wasn’t only about laughs. His romantic relationship with Kensi Blye (Daniela Ruah) grew into one of the franchise’s most treasured love stories. What started as playful flirtation evolved into a deep and genuine connection, culminating in their marriage in Season 10—a heartwarming milestone that delighted fans. Given all this, it’s easy to hope for Marty’s return, bringing back his wit and unwavering loyalty.

Deeks Has Already Shown He Fits Seamlessly Within the NCIS Universe

Deeks and Nick Torres in the Crossover
Beyond just being likable, Marty proved his ability to blend smoothly with other teams in the franchise during a major three-part crossover event that linked NCIS, NCIS: Los Angeles, and NCIS: Hawai’i. In this crossover, Marty formed an unexpectedly fantastic partnership with Nick Torres (Wilmer Valderrama). The two couldn’t be more different: Nick is the quiet, lone wolf type, while Marty thrives on social banter and sharp one-liners. Yet, instead of clashing, their dynamic struck a perfect balance, creating both comedic gold and genuine warmth.

During the crossover, Torres was warned that Marty was “sensitive,” while Marty was told Nick was a lone wolf—both strongly contested those labels. Their interactions challenged traditional notions of masculinity, as Marty openly showed emotional depth and Torres allowed himself to connect socially. Fans loved every moment of their interaction and wished for more time with this duo, which unfortunately was limited to just that three-hour event.

Olsen Confirms He’s Not Planning a Return to NCIS

The Franchise Missed a Trick With Marty

Sadly, hopes for Marty’s comeback were dashed when Eric Christian Olsen told TV Line in 2024 that he has no plans to revisit the role. While he fondly remembers the cast, saying, “I actively miss Todd, and I was texting with Renee [Felice Smith] this morning, and I see Daniela all the time,” Olsen’s current passion lies elsewhere. He is focused on his new role as executive producer for the CBS show Matlock, which premiered in 2024 and has already been renewed.

While it’s great to see Olsen succeed in new projects, it’s a bittersweet moment for fans who hoped to see Marty again—especially alongside Nick Torres. For now, we can only treasure the 14 seasons of NCIS: Los Angeles and that unforgettable crossover where Marty shone bright.
