The season 7 finale of The Rookie has left us with a lot of questions when it comes to Lucy Chen (Melissa O’Neil). After unexpectedly getting her heart broken by Tim (Eric Winter), she spent most of the season working on herself and rebuilding their relationship. Tim even showed initiative to work on self-improvement in order to give Lucy the best version of himself. However, with Tim outranking Lucy, there was no ethical way for them to reignite the relationship.
During The Rookie‘s many episodes, Lucy has always been career-driven. After failing the undercover exam, she decided to give the sergeant exam a try and she nailed it. This was the career boost she needed for herself. There was even an open position for her to start right away and Tim was very happy for her. However, their relationship may not be in her best interest in The Rookie season 8. With all that comes with being in charge, Lucy should focus on her new role instead of retrying her relationship with Tim.
The Rookie Season 7 Finale Leaves Lucy & Tim’s Relationship Still In Limbo
Chenford Is Still A No-Go And May Stay That Way For A While
The season 7 finale of The Rookie gave us a long-awaited look at a Lucy and Tim reunion. Unfortunately, it was just a teaser. When Lucy comes home from her night shift, Tim is waiting there with breakfast ready for her. This grand, romantic gesture showed how much Tim still cared for Lucy and that he was ready to get back together. This prompts him to ask her to move in with him in order to combat their conflicting schedules. Unfortunately, she had fallen asleep and did not hear his proposal.
As much as we loved to see Tim making the effort, it wasn’t enough. Tim’s love for Lucy is clear, but the timing is never right. When Lucy finally got her promotion, everyone’s first question was if they were getting back together instead of asking what was best for both of them. Although they both expressed an interest in getting back together at different points of the season, it doesn’t look like that will happen anytime soon. As much as we want to see it, Tim and Lucy’s romance in The Rookie has more challenges that they need to overcome.
Lucy Fixing The Night Shift Is A Bigger Challenge For Her In The Rookie Season 8 Than Her Relationship With Tim
“The Dream Team” Needs To Be Woken Up And Lucy Is The Only One Who Can Do It
Lucy has always been a problem-solver. When she was assigned to the night shift, she was presented with her biggest problem yet. After realizing that she was the only officer responding to any calls, she located her squad and found out why they were called “The Dream Team.” They were all in their shops, sleeping. Clearly, this is something they had become comfortable doing because it continued to happen even after she had caught them. It is unlike Lucy to allow something like this to happen, especially under her watch, and she will need to fix this in season 8.
As a brand-new sergeant, it will take a lot for Lucy to gain the respect of the officers under her. All her attention will go to figuring out how to gain that respect while also fixing the sleeping issue. She will not have time nor energy to put into a relationship with Tim, which is why this romance is going to have to take a step back for a little while. If Lucy wants her relationship with Tim to succeed, then she will need to put her focus on her career because she will resent him if she doesn’t.
Why The Rookie Season 8 Should Focus On Lucy’s Professional Arc Rather Than Her Personal One
It Is Time For Her To Achieve Her Career Goals Like She Has Always Intended
Ever since season 1, Lucy has been career-driven, and nothing will stand in the way of her goals. She has gone through so much in order for her to achieve this position that, so far in the show, has only been held by men. She has a lot to prove to herself and her fellow officers, which is why it is important for the show to focus on her career rather than her personal life. It is time for Lucy to achieve her dreams of being a great leader.
When it comes to television shows, the female character loses something in order to go far in her career. This would not do justice to Lucy.
It will be nice to see a female character succeed without having to choose between a relationship and her job. If the writers give Lucy at least some time in season 8 to establish herself, then she will be able to have both without sacrifice. When it comes to television shows, female characters too often have to lose something in order to go far in their careers. The Rookie has the opportunity to give Lucy a career jump without compromising her character while also giving her a supportive partner.
