Ghosts star Rebecca Wisocky reflects on the benefit of withholding Hetty’s power reveal. After taking a holiday break, Ghosts season 4 will return to CBS on Thursday, January 30 at 8:30 PM ET to continue checking in with Sam (Rose McIver), Jay (Utkarsh Ambudkar), and the rest of the Woodstone spirits. Although it’s known that Hetty’s power will be unveiled at some point in the upcoming episodes, Wisocky feels that there’s been some benefit to withholding her character’s ability.
In an interview with Collider, Wisocky was asked about the way Hetty’s hidden power drives her trajectory in Ghosts season 4. The actor explains that, for someone so fixated on status, it’s been interesting to have Hetty as the one with unknown powers. Wisocky also spoke about the way that showrunners Joe Port and Jose Wiseman have revealed some secrets even while keeping others, like the death of Sasappis, who is played by Román Zaragoza. Wisocky’s quote is below:
I thought it was wonderful that the character that is so preoccupied with status was the one that believed that she might not actually have a power at all. That was fun for us to play and fun for the other ghosts to get to mock her and chide her about that.
Our showrunners, Joe Port and Joe Wiseman, have been really smart with the way they’ve just kind of slowly revealed these big pivotal secrets in these characters’ moments, like their death stories and their powers. So there’s one left after we reveal Hetty’s power. I think there’s only one left that we need to find out — Sasappis’ death. But I think it’s a good way to keep some of those mysteries alive and those options open for them in terms of different plotlines they want to pursue.
What Hetty’s Lack Of Power Has Meant For Ghosts
It’ll Be Impactful
The spirits among the Ghosts cast of characters can be a little sensitive when it comes to their powers. Pete (Richie Moriarty) arguably has it best because he actually gets to leave Woodstone and see the world, albeit not without consequences. Some others are less flattered about what they’re able to do. Hetty, focused as she is on appearances, feels worst of all about the fact that she’s without power.
The lack of power hits harder because of what viewers already know about Hetty’s tragic death and what it reveals about a character that would prefer to highlight her privilege. In actuality, however, Hetty’s life was not so simple. That may be reflected in the power reveal once it is eventually disclosed. If that’s the case, Ghosts has the chance to recreate one of its most emotional emotions.
Our Take On Ghosts’ Hetty Reveal
What’s Next For Woodstone?
Heading into a likely renewal for Ghosts season 5, considering how well the sitcom performs in the ratings, the last frontier may have to have the spirits move on to the other side and find closure. But there is a level of finality to that, which is why it makes sense that the show’s team is taking its time filling out backstories and character details.
