Queen Charlotte: That Devastating Finale Broke Our Hearts — Grade It!

Queen Charlotte showrunner and writer Shonda Rhimes must answer for her crimes.

We weren’t emotionally prepared for the Bridgerton spinoff’s devastating finale, which solidified Charlotte and George’s enduring romance — and left us in utter shambles.

George, desperate for a cure to his mental illness, endured literal torture and pushed Charlotte away at every turn. It wasn’t until Charlotte testified one of his sessions that she understood why he kept her at arm’s length. He was trying to protect her, but Charlotte didn’t want that. She yearned to be with her husband and made that perfectly clear when she confronted him at his Kew estate.

Charlotte demanded that George tell her he didn’t love her so she could walk away and raise their child in peace. But the king could not bring himself to say that, nor would he admit how he truly felt. He was too ashamed of his illness. Charlotte pressed him again, and he finally caved.

“Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story”George, desperate for a cure to his mental illness, endures literal torture and pushes Charlotte away at every turn.

“From the moment I saw you trying to go over the wall, I have loved you desperately,” he declared. “I cannot breathe when you are not near. I love you, Charlotte. My heart calls your name.”

That was the first of many heartbreaks throughout the episode. Read on below for the other moments that left us an emotional wreck, and a few that made us swoon.

“You and me.”
We were moved by Charlotte’s resolve to stick by her husband, who felt guilt and shame over his mental illness.

“This madness has been my secret my entire life. This darkness is my burden. You bring a light,” he told her.

Charlotte was not deterred. “George, it is you and me,” she assured. “We can do this. Cùng.”

“Hello, little king.”
We’re still recovering from this sweet moment in which George spoke to his unborn child.

“I have been an excellent mother.”
Queen Charlotte’s desperation for her children to conceive a royal heir pushed them past their breaking point, resulting in this tense moment with the prince regent. When she insisted that she was a good mother, he revealed the gut-wrenching truth.

“No,” he pushed back. “You have been our queen, but you have never really been our mother.”

“Great love can make miracles.”
Reynolds and Brimsley may have been discussing whether George and Charlotte’s love would sustain George’s illness, but we couldn’t help but think this quote also applies to their ongoing romance.

“I’m here. Everyone here cares for the king.”
Brimsley dedicated his life to serving the monarchy, even at the expense of his own happiness.

“There is no one here but us.”
At the ball, when George showed signs of another episode, Charlotte held his hand and helped him through it. “You and me,” she reminded him. His growing panic subsided, and the royal couple finished their beautiful dance to a classical rendition of SZA’s “Nobody Gets Me.”

“I cannot marry you.”
Adolphus and Agatha could have had a great love, but Agatha chose to stand on her own instead. Given how things turned out for her in Bridgerton, she made the right decision.

“Our line.”
Delighted that her son Edward and his wife Victoria successfully conceived an heir, Charlotte rushed to tell George the good news. He was lost in his stars, so she hid under the bed to bring him back to reality.

“Fancy meeting you here,” he told her. “You didn’t go over the wall.”

“No, George. I didn’t go over the wall,” she added.

And now we’re drowning in a pool of emotions.
