The film’s lead actress – Dakota Johnson – has spoken out many times about the reasons that led to its disastrous failure. She recently spoke out to deny her involvement in the poor reviews of Madame Web – the film received only 11% positive reviews on Rotten Tomatoes and 3 Golden Raspberry Awards for Worst Picture, Worst Actress and Worst Screenplay.

Dakota Johnson believes that in Hollywood today, many creative decisions in art and entertainment are made by people who are not creative at all. She also explains that Madame Web is an unfortunate case of starting with a certain vision but the implementation process creates a completely different product. And she is just part of that chain of unintended changes.
Dakota Johnson rose to fame in the 18+ hit film Fifty Shades of Grey and seemed to have a turning point when she switched to superhero films with Madame Web . But the film’s poor performance made her the center of criticism and she has repeatedly spoken out about why the film was not well received. The actress is currently promoting Materialists , a new film from A24 studio directed by Oscar-nominated director Celine Song. Dakota Johnson stars alongside two of today’s top actors, Pedro Pascal and Chris Evans.
The film also marks the return of the Hollywood “muse” to the romantic film genre. Previously, many film scripts of this genre were sent to Dakota Johnson but she refused because she did not want to repeat herself and could not find a connection with the character.
