The snail ghost seen in Ghosts season 4 may not be the last animal ghost added to the show’s ensemble, according to recent comments from the CBS sitcom’s showrunner. The ghosts of CBS’s Ghosts are the true stars of the sitcom, so it is always exciting when a new spirit is added to the Woodstone Mansion’s growing lineup. Although Chris the stripper’s ghost only spent an episode in the setting after his untimely death, Sass’ Ghosts season 4 love story brought Taylor Ortega’s witty Hollywood screenwriter on board as a new recurring guest ghost.
Joan, along with Ghosts season 4’s more divisive new arrival Patience, was one of the most prominent new ghosts in season 4. However, episode 6, “The Primary Source,” revealed that an entirely different type of ghost dwells on the expansive property. Trevor and the rest of the ghosts discovered a ghost snail and briefly made it their pet before it ascended to the afterlife. Per TVLine, Ghosts co-showrunner Joe Wiseman reveals that viewers can expect more animal spirits to crop up in future outings of the sitcom:
“We’ve talked about a lot of different animals… We love that ghosts can be animals — and we have a few ideas.”
Ghosts Season 4’s Animal Spirits Open Up Countless Future Story Opportunities
The Snail Ghost Seen In Season 4 Is Just The Beginning
Although Wiseman didn’t specify which animal ghosts viewers should be on the lookout for in the future, this remains an exciting development. Since Ghosts is essentially a new show, Wiseman and his collaborators have more or less free reigns with regard to crafting the show’s lore. Granted that Ghosts UK first established the concept, some rules can still be bent or fully rewritten depending on the needs of the CBS series.
While Ghosts season 5 should prioritize Sass’s backstory, Jay retrieving his soul from the demonic Elias, and other more pressing plots, it is still fun to find out that the show has a plan for this minor lore change from season 4.
More animal ghosts in Ghosts season 5 could be a great idea, as they could provide all manner of interesting stories for the characters. While Ghosts season 5 should prioritize Sass’s backstory, Jay retrieving his soul from the demonic Elias, and other, more pressing plots, it is still fun to find out that the show has a plan for this minor lore change from season 4 and won’t simply forget the twist.
Our Take On Ghosts Season 5 Including New Animal Ghosts
The CBS Sitcom Regularly Updates Its Ever-Changing Lore
It would be easy for Ghosts season 5 to forget all about animal ghosts, turning the snail’s appearance in “The Primary Source” into a non-sequitur. However, since adding new human ghosts requires a lot more story setup, introducing new animal ghosts could be a fun, low-key way to add characters to the show’s cast.
Already, not every Ghosts season 4 episode had enough screen time for every spirit, so animal ghosts would be a fun, low-stakes way to add more characters without introducing new ghosts or humans. Like Elias’s transformation into a demon, animal ghosts also prove that the rules of the afterlife are surprisingly complex in the world of Ghosts, and this revelation gives season 5 plenty of potential plots to explore going forward.
